RESOLUTION NO. 8203-07 BY: Antonio, Butler, Dever, <br /> FitzGerald, Madigan, Seelie. <br /> <br />A resolution calling on the United States government to <br />coramit to and develop a firm strategy and timetable to <br />begin the orderly and comprehensive withdrawal of U.S. <br />military personnel and bases from Iraq as soon as <br />possible; urging the United State Congress to pass <br />legislation prohibiting the President from spending <br />U.S. taxpayer dollars on any new escalation in Iraq, or <br />expansion of the Iraqi conflict beyond Iraqi borders; <br />further urging the United States government to provide <br />the people of Iraq with all necessary non- military <br />material aid for the security of the Iraqi people, and <br />for the rebuilding of Iraq , and further urging the <br />U.S. Congress to redirect financial resources used to <br />prosecute the war in order tq address the pressing <br />needs of Americans, including health, eduqation, and <br />homeland security. <br /> <br />WHEREAS: the United States has been engaged in a war in <br />Iraq for more then four years, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS: U.S. involvement has resulted in the deaths of <br />more than 3,500.U.S. soldiers, including at least 148 <br />soldiers from Ohio, including Lakewood, and the <br />wounding and disabling of more than 25,350 U.S. <br />military personnel, and: <br /> <br />WHEREAS: U.S. involvement in Iraq has cost the people <br />of the United States nearly a half-trillion dollars, <br />the people of Ohio at least $15 billion and the people <br />of Lakewood at least $ 79 million*: and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS: the people of the United States and the City <br />of Lakewood face severe problems in health care, <br />housing, education, economic security, including jobs, <br />and; <br /> <br />WHEREAS: the money spent on the war in Iraq could be <br />used to help solve the desperate problems of the people <br />both in the United States and in Iraq, and; <br /> <br />WHEREAS: a vast majority of the citizens of the United <br />States do not support continued involvement in the war <br />in Iraq; and favor a timetable for withdrawal from <br />Iraq; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS: Resolutions opposing the U.S. war in Iraq have <br />been passed in over 300 towns, cities and states, <br />including Cleveland, and Cincinnati, and by the <br />Cuyahoga County Con~issioners; <br /> <br />WHEREAS: ~ongress has the power, through its control of <br />the purse, to limit escalation of the war and compel <br />redeployment of troops; and, <br /> <br /> <br />
