RESOLUTION NO. g365-09 <br />BY: Antonio, Bullock, Butler, Dever, <br />Madigan, Powers, Summers <br />A RESOLUTION supporting St. James Catholic Church in Lakewood, Ohio, and <br />the Friends of St. James Parish in their efforts to appeal from the decision to close the <br />parish in 2010. <br />WHEREAS, St. James Catholic Church was founded in 1908 and last year <br />celebrated its hundredth year of existence; and <br />WHEREAS, from its humble beginnings in an empty storeroom at 15607 Detroit <br />Avenue to its magnificent and beautiful structure today at 17514 Detroit Avenue, St. <br />James has offered many Lakewood citizens a cherished atmosphere in which to <br />experience all aspects of life's events; and <br />WHEREAS, the guiding principles of St. James parish -such as concern for <br />others, commitment to the common good, and compassion for all -flows out to the <br />greater community through the parishioners' good works and volunteerism; and <br />WHEREAS, today St. James church provides a wide variety of community <br />outreach programs among which include day care services, youth activities, adult <br />education, counseling services and community meals; and <br />WHEREAS, St. James hosts the popular Lakewood Family Room by agreement <br />with the city's Department of Human Services, Division of Early Childhood; and <br />WHEREAS, St. James is the largest parish in Lakewood by members and <br />households, having gained in membership by 224 households between 2008 and 2009; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, St. James church has the highest weekly attendance in its cluster of <br />parishes and it performs the most baptisms and marriages of Lakewood's Catholic <br />churches; and <br />WHEREAS, St. James parish is scheduled to be closed by the Diocese of <br />Cleveland in or around summer 2010; and <br />WHEREAS, the Friends of St. James have organized an orderly, civilized and yet <br />impassioned campaign to keep St. James open for the next century and beyond; and <br />
