RESOLUTION NO. $435-10 BY: Antonio, Bullock, Butler, <br />Madigan, Powers, Smith, Summers. <br />A RESOLUTION to commend the St. Edwazd High School community for its <br />many and varied accomplishments during the 2009-2010 school year. <br />WHEREAS, St. Edwazd High School has established a tradition of excellence in <br />education and co-curricular activities since its founding in 1949; and <br />WHEREAS, as one of the city's largest employers, St. Edward High School <br />enrolls more than 800 students and employs nearly 100 administrators, faculty and staff, <br />including many Lakewood residents, and is thus essential to the city's economic and <br />educational well-being; and <br />WHEREAS, the St. Edward community participated in a Service Day on May 8, <br />2010, with 65 to 75 students, pazents, faculty, alumni and friends helping elderly <br />Lakewood residents and the Barton Center immediately following the worst windstorm in <br />decades (with coordination from Lakewood's Office on Aging); cooked and served <br />thousands of meals to needy people passing through the cafeteria during Community <br />Meal nights; raised $30,000 for Haitian earthquake victims; donated more than 240 pints <br />of blood to the Red Cross; and partnered its pre-engineering students with Engineering <br />World Health to calibrate electrosurgery units that will be used in developing countries; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the St. Edward .Marching Band earned a "Superior" (the highest) <br />rating by the Ohio Music Educators Association in statewide competition; and <br />WHEREAS, the Edsman student newspaper won the University of Iowa School <br />of Journalism's International First Place Award and the Columbia University Scholastic <br />Press Association's Silver Medalist Award; and the editors of the Edsman were featured <br />in a Plain Dealer article detailing their efforts to help a high school in postwaz Baghdad, <br />Iraq, start and run its own school newspaper; and <br />WHEREAS, Lakewood resident and classics teacher Stergios Lazos was named <br />the American Philological Association's teacher of the yeaz, the only such award given <br />nationally; and Lakewood native and head basketball coach Eric Flannery was named <br />head coach of the U.S. youth Olympic basketball team competing in Singapore this <br />summer; and <br />WHEREAS, 13 seniors were named National Merit semifmalists or commended <br />students; sophomores Dillon Bak and Matthew Smith were just two of 600 students <br />worldwide to earn perfect scores on the National Latin Exam; and junior Josh Mueller <br />earned a perfect score (36) on the ACT exam; and <br />WHEREAS, sophomore Owen McAndrews was selected to U.S. Olympic under- <br />18 volleyball team; the school baseball team won the state championship in Division I; <br />
