RESOLUTIONNO. 8689 -13 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Madigan, <br />Nowlin, Powers, Smith. <br />A RESOLUTION to take effect immediately provided it receives the affirmative vote of <br />at least five members of council or otherwise to take effect at the earliest period allowed by law, <br />to support the effort of the Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) to build an offshore <br />wind power industry in Ohio. <br />WHEREAS, there is a critical need to develop more domestic clean energy to protect our <br />environment and create new industries, and; <br />WHEREAS, offshore wind power is a clean energy alternative that can achieve <br />significant scale and can be developed in a responsible and economical way, and; <br />WHEREAS, offshore wind power can become an important clean supplement that helps <br />the Great Lakes region diversify its energy portfolio, and; <br />WHEREAS, the Great Lakes Region holds over 700GW of offshore wind generating <br />potential, and; <br />WHEREAS, Northeast Ohio is positioned to fully realize the economic and <br />environmental benefits of the emerging U.S. offshore wind power industry, and; <br />WHEREAS, LEEDCo is a regional non - profit and economic development organization <br />building an offshore wind power industry in Ohio to create jobs and heal the environment, and; <br />WHEREAS, LEEDCo is currently developing a demonstration project called <br />"Icebreaker," scheduled for completion in October 2017, that will consist of six wind turbines <br />seven miles off the coast of downtown Cleveland, Ohio, and; <br />WHEREAS, LEEDCo has already secured a $4 million investment from the U.S. <br />Department of Energy and is competing with six other offshore wind projects for an additional <br />$46.7 million federal investment, and; <br />WHEREAS, "Icebreaker" will create over 500 jobs and lead to an industry that employs <br />8,000 by 2030; <br />WHEREAS, "Icebreaker" will become a model for responsible offshore wind <br />development and unlock the offshore wind potential of the entire Great Lakes region, and; <br />WHEREAS, LEEDCo's POWER Pledge campaign has demonstrated overwhelming <br />public support; now; therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />
