<br />(b) Double traps. No fixture shall be
<br />double-trapped.
<br />(c) Crown-vented, bell or f ull S t7•aps.
<br />No back vent shall be installed within two
<br />pipe diameters of the trap weir. Bell or full
<br />S traps are prohibited.
<br />1593.31 Pipe clean-outs; where required.
<br />(a) Location, An easily accessible clean-
<br />out shall be provided above the floor near
<br />the foot of each vertical waste, soil stack, and
<br />inside leader. There shall be a clean-out in
<br />a Y-branch, or other clean-out approved by
<br />the Building Official, inside the wall near
<br />the connection between the building drain
<br />and building sewer.
<br />(b)'Clean-outs in long branches and in
<br />building drain. Clean-outs in horizontal
<br />drainage lines 4-inch diameter or less shall
<br />be not more than 50 feet apart and not more
<br />than 100 feet apart for pipe sizes. in excess of
<br />4 inches. Clean-outs shall be installed at each
<br />change of direction of the building drain
<br />greater than a 45° angle.
<br />1593.32 Pipe clean-outs; general require-
<br />ments.
<br />(a) Material and design. The bodies of
<br />clean-out ferrules shall conform in thickness
<br />to that required for pipe and fittings of the
<br />same metal and extend not less than ~4 inch
<br />above the hub. For new work, the clean-out
<br />plug shall be of heavy brass not less than 1/s
<br />inch thick and shall be provided with raised
<br />nut or recessed socket for removal. Both fer-
<br />rule and plug shall have American Standard
<br />Tapered Pipe Threads. Heavy lead plugs
<br />may be used for repairing aclean-out where
<br />necessary.
<br />(b) Size. Clean-outs shall be of the same
<br />diameter as the pipes into which they are in-
<br />stalled up to 4 inches and not less than 4
<br />inches for larger pipe, unless otherwise de-
<br />termined by the Building Official.
<br />(c). Equivalents. Any bolted or screwed
<br />floor or wall connection of fixture traps shall
<br />be regarded as a clean-out.
<br />(d) Accessibility. All required clean-outs
<br />shall be located so as to be readily accessible,
<br />Exterior underground clean-outs shall be ex-
<br />tended to within 8 inches of the surface or
<br />otherwise made accessible. Clean-outs shall
<br />be so installed that there be a clearance of
<br />not less than 18 inches for rodding,
<br />1593.33 Backwater valves.
<br />(a) Permission required.. Backwater

<br />valves shall be permitted only on such con-
<br />ditions and be of such design, location and
<br />capacity as are approved by the Building Of-
<br />ficial.
<br />(b) Materials and construction. Back-
<br />water valves, where permitted, shall have all
<br />bearing parts of corrosion-resistant material
<br />and shall be constructed so as to insure a
<br />positive mechanical seal against backflow.
<br />Backwater valves shall be located so as to be
<br />readily accessible for inspection and cleaning
<br />and when fully open shall have a capacity
<br />not less than the pipe in which they are in-
<br />stalled.
<br />1593.34 Plumbing fixtures; general require-
<br />ments.
<br />(a) Quality. Except as permitted in this
<br />Section and Section 1593.05, all plumbing
<br />fixtures shall be made of materials with
<br />smooth, impervious surface, and shall con-
<br />form in quality and design to one of the
<br />following standards:
<br />Staple Porcelain Plumbing Fixture, NBS
<br />Commercial Standard CS4.
<br />Staple Vitreous China Plumbing Fixtures,
<br />NBS Commercial Standard CS20.

<br />(b) Alternate materials. Sinks, lava-
<br />tories, and special fixtures may be made of
<br />soapstone, lead, copper, copper-base alloy,
<br />nickel, nickel-copper alloy, corrosion-re-
<br />sisting steel, or other approved material.
<br />1593.35. Used plumbing fixtures and mate-
<br />rials.
<br />Used plumbing fixtures and materials
<br />shall not be installed unless they have been
<br />inspected by the Building Official and found
<br />to be in satisfactory physical and. sanitary
<br />condition and to meet the requirements of
<br />this Dwelling House Code, and identified as
<br />approved by a sticker affixed by such official.
<br />1593.36 1Vater-closet combinations.
<br />(a) Types of water-closets. Water-closet
<br />bowls shall besiphon-jet, reverse-trap, wash-
<br />down, or blowout type with floor outlet, or
<br />siphon-jet or blowout type with wall outlet.

<br />existing electrical equipment; the replace-
<br />ment of electrical equipment with equip-
<br />ment of like type and capacity, connected
<br />to existing electrical terminal connections
<br />and similar work for the purpose of main-
<br />tenance of an existing electrical installa-
<br />tion in conformity with the provisions of
<br />this Dwelling House Code, but shall not
<br />include the installation of any permanent
<br />wiring, or major changes to, or extensions
<br />of, electrical terminal connections.
<br />Masonry: Stone, brick, structural clay tile,
<br />concrete masonry unit, glass block,
<br />gypsum block, or other similar materials,
<br />or a combination of same, bonded together
<br />with mortar; also plain concrete,
<br />Ashlar-. Masonry of sawed, dressed,
<br />tooled, or quarry-faced stone.
<br />Coursed rubble -. Masonry composed of
<br />roughly shaped stones fitting approxi-
<br />mately on level beds.
<br />Mayor. The chief executive officer of the
<br />Municipality in which this Dwelling
<br />House Code applies.
<br />Mechanical equipment. All equipment in-
<br />cluded under the general heading of
<br />plumbing, heating, air conditioning, gas-
<br />fitting and electrical work.
<br />Mechanical ventilation. The process of sup-
<br />plying or removing air under pressure or
<br />suction of fans, or induced by ducts or
<br />vents with wind-blown or stationary ven-
<br />tilators.
<br />Millwork. The finished wood portions of a
<br />building which are customarily, obtained
<br />from a planing mill, such as doors, window
<br />and door frames, sash and panel-work.
<br />Minor repairs. (As applied to electrical
<br />work) The installation or replacement
<br />of light bulbs or fuses, and repairs to
<br />portable equipment such as lamps, irons,
<br />toasters, fans, sweepers, and the like;. but
<br />does not include changes in, additions
<br />ox repairs to permanent electrical wiring.
<br />(As applied to heating or gas piping)
<br />The servicing, repair or replacement of
<br />valves, dampers, controls, 'thermostats
<br />and 'similar devices with like material or
<br />material serving the same purpose; the
<br />cleaning of a heat appliance, flues or pip-
<br />ing; but shall not include the installation
<br />of additional equipment or major changes
<br />in existing equipment. (See also: Al-
<br />teration of a heating system.)
<br />(As applied to plumbing) The repair-
<br />ing or replacement of faucets or valves or
<br />parts .thereof with like material.. or ma-
<br />ter ial serving 'the same purpose; .the

<br />clearance of stoppages in fixture traps,
<br />the stopping of leaks, and other minor re-
<br />pairs or replacements classified as "Minor
<br />repairs" by the Building Official; pro-
<br />vided no changes other than those spe-
<br />cifically permitted by this paragraph are
<br />made in the piping or fixtures and pro=
<br />vided further that the permitted clear-
<br />ance of stoppages can be done without
<br />(a) use of power-driven equipment, (b)
<br />cutting into pipe or fittings, or (c) the
<br />removal or replacement of drainage or
<br />vent piping.
<br />Municipality. The governmental unit which
<br />has adopted this Dwelling House Code.
<br />Muntins. The members dividing the glass
<br />or openings of a window or door sash.
<br />1517.15 Letter "N."
<br />Narrow throat register boxes. Register
<br />boxes which are 3~/z inches or less in
<br />depth measured in a direction at right
<br />angles to the register face.
<br />Natural ventilation. Ventilation derived
<br />from open windows, doors, louvers or
<br />other openings direct to the outside air.
<br />Noncombustible. (not combustible; incom-
<br />bustible) .
<br />-Construction. That construction in
<br />which all structural members, including
<br />floors, roofs and their supports,, are of
<br />steel, iron, concrete, or of other noncom-
<br />bustible materials, and in which the .ex-
<br />terior walls are of noncombustible con-
<br />struction having a fire resistance rating of
<br />not less than two hours.
<br />- Material. A material having afire-haz-
<br />ard classification for flame spread of not
<br />more than 25 when tested according to
<br />ASTM E 84 or UL Subject 723.
