<br />terwork applied over masonry as a protec-
<br />tion ordecoration.
<br />Partition:
<br />Bearing-. A partition which supports a
<br />load in addition to its own weight.
<br />Fire -. A partition of noncombustible
<br />construction designed to restrict the
<br />spread of fire or to provide an area of
<br />refuge, but not necessarily continuous
<br />through all stories nor extended through
<br />the roof.
<br />Nonbearing -. A partition which does not
<br />support any load other than its own
<br />weight.
<br />Person. A person or persons, firm or cor-
<br />poration.
<br />Pier. A short pillar of masonry, usually
<br />rectangular in horizontal cross section,
<br />used to support other structural members.
<br />In masonry, the height of a pier is not
<br />more than six times its least lateral dimen-
<br />sion. Compare: Column.
<br />Pilaster. A part of a wall that projects not
<br />more than one-half of its own width be-
<br />yond the outside or inside face of a wall,
<br />acting as an engaged pier. Compare: But-
<br />tress.
<br />Plan. A drawing representing any one of the
<br />floors or horizontal cross-sections of a
<br />building, or the horizontal plane of any
<br />object or area.
<br />Plate. A horizontal structural member
<br />placed on a wall or partition to carry the
<br />trusses of a roof, joists or rafters; also the
<br />base member of a partition or other frame.
<br />Plumbing: Plumbing includes the practice,
<br />materials, and fixtures used in the instal-
<br />lation, maintenance, extension, and altera-
<br />tion of all piping, fixtures, appliances, and
<br />appurtenances in connection with any of
<br />the following: Sanitary drainage or storm
<br />drainage facilities, the venting system
<br />and the public or private water-supply
<br />systems, within or adjacent to any build-
<br />ing, structure, or conveyance.
<br />-fixture. Plumbing fixtures are installed
<br />receptacles, devices, or appliances which
<br />are supplied with water or which receive
<br />or discharge liquids orliquid-borne wastes,
<br />with or without discharge into the drain-
<br />- age system with which they may be di-
<br />rectly or indirectly connected.
<br />-system. Includes the water supply and
<br />distribution pipes, plumbing fixtures and
<br />traps; soil, waste, and vent pipes; building-
<br />drains and building sewers including their
<br />respective connections, devices, and ap-
<br />purtenances within the property lines of
<br />the premises, and water-treating or water-
<br />using equipment.
<br />Pointing. The treatment of joints in masonry
<br />for appearance or protection by filling with
<br />mortar under tool pressure and usually to
<br />a defmite form.
<br />Potable water. Water which has been ap-
<br />proved by the local Board of Health, the
<br />Ohio Department of Health or the County
<br />District Board of Health for drinking,
<br />culinary and domestic purposes.
<br />Private sewer. A sewer privately owned and
<br />not directly controlled by public author-
<br />ity.
<br />Public utility. A public service or facility,
<br />such as electricity, gas, telephone, water
<br />and sewers.
<br />Purlin. A horizontal member usually laid
<br />at right angles to the main rafters or
<br />trusses of a roof to support elements of the
<br />roof framing.

<br />Radiant heating. That system of heating in
<br />which only the heat radiated from the
<br />panel is effective.
<br />Rafter. A structural member of a roof de-
<br />signed to support roof loads. The upper
<br />chord of a roof truss shall not be con-
<br />sidered as a rafter. The rafters of a flat
<br />roof are sometimes called roof joists.
<br />Ramp. An inclined plane connecting sepa-
<br />rate levels.
<br />Rated input. That maximum amount of fuel
<br />in Btuh which a heat appliance is designed
<br />to burn completely,
<br />Registered architect, An individual who is
<br />registered to practice architecture under
<br />the laws of the State of Ohio.
<br />Registered engineer. An individual who is
<br />registered to practice engineering under
<br />the laws of the State of Ohio.
<br />Relief vent. A branch from a vent stack,
<br />connected to a horizontal branch between
<br />the first fixture drain and the soil or waste
<br />stack, whose primary function is to pro-
<br />vide for circulation of air between the
<br />vent stack and the soil or waste stack.
<br />Repair. The replacement or renewal of any
<br />part of an existing building, structure or
<br />device for the purpose of maintenance.
<br />Retemper. To remix and add water to mor-
<br />.tar; plaster or concrete after the original -
<br />mix has begun to harden~or set.

<br />1593.23 Water closet and trap standard
<br />service.
<br />Fixture connections between drainage
<br />pipes and water closets, floor-outlet service
<br />sinks and earthenware trap standards, shall
<br />be made by means of brass, hard-lead or iron
<br />flanges, calked, soldered, or screwed to the
<br />drainage pipe, The connection shall be bolted,
<br />with gasket or washer or setting compound
<br />between the earthenware and the connec-
<br />tion. The floor flange shall be set on a firm
<br />base. Inwood joist construction, the connec-
<br />tion between the earthenware and soil pipe
<br />shall have a lead bend, or not less than 4" of
<br />lead pipe, or other construction satisfactory
<br />to the Building Official.
<br />1593.24 Prohibited joints and connections.
<br />Any fitting or connection which has an
<br />enlargement, chamber, or recess with a
<br />ledge, shoulder, or reduction of pipe area,
<br />that offers an obstruction to flow through the
<br />drain, is prohibited,
<br />1593.25 Waterproofing of exterior openings.
<br />Joints at the roof, around vent pipes, shall
<br />be made watertight by the use of lead, cop-
<br />per, galvanized iron or other approved flash-
<br />ings or flashing material. Exterior wall open-
<br />ings shall be made watertight.
<br />1593.26 Increasers and reducers.
<br />Where different sizes of pipes, or pipes
<br />and fittings are to be connected, the proper
<br />size increasers or reducers or reducing fit-
<br />tings shall be used between the two sizes.
<br />1593.27 Traps; where required.
<br />(a) Fixture traps. Except as hereinafter
<br />provided in subsections (b) and (c) of this
<br />Section, each plumbing fixture shall be sepa-
<br />rately trapped by a trap integral with the
<br />plumbing fixture, or by a waterseal trap
<br />placed as near to the fixture as possible,
<br />(b) Combination fixtures. A combination
<br />fixture may have only one trap, provided
<br />that no separate compartment of such fixture
<br />is more than 6 inches deeper than any other
<br />compartment connected to the same trap,
<br />and the waste outlets of such compartments
<br />are not more than 30 inches apart.
<br />(c) Three lavatories or laundry trays, A
<br />set of 3 single compartment laundry trays or
<br />3 lavatories may be connected to one trap
<br />provided the waste outlets are not more than
<br />30 inches apart. Where 3 fixtures are so in-
<br />stalled, the trap shall be centrally located.
<br />1593.28 Sizes of traps and fixture drains.
<br />(a) Minimum sizes.- The diameter-of a
<br />trap for a given fixture other than in a fix-
<br />ture with an integral trap, shall be not less
<br />than specified in the following Table.

<br />(b) Integral traps. The fixture drain for
<br />water closets and other fixtures with integral
<br />traps shall be not smaller than the fixture
<br />outlet, and for water closets shall be not less
<br />than 3 inches.
<br />1593.29 Traps; general requirements.
<br />(a) Seal. Each fixture trap shall have a
<br />water seal of not less than 2 inches and not
<br />more than 4 inches. The horizontal distance
<br />from the trap inlet to the trap weir, meas-
<br />uredfrom the side of the trap inlet closest to
<br />the trap weir, shall not exceed 24 inches.
<br />(b) Clean-out. Each fixture trap, except
<br />those in combination with fixtures in which
<br />the trap seal is readily accessible, shall have
<br />a readily accessible brass trap screw of am-
<br />ple size protected by water seal; provided
<br />that when a portion of a trap is readily re-
<br />movable for cleaning purposes, no trap
<br />screw shall be required.
<br />(c) Levels and protection. All traps shall
<br />be .set true with respect to their water seals
<br />and protected from freezing.
<br />(d) Building traps (House Traps) .
<br />Building traps shall be installed only when
<br />specifically approved by the Building Official,
<br />and when so installed shall be vented and
<br />provided with clean-outs in conformity with
<br />the conditions of approval.
<br />1593.30 Prohibited traps.
<br />(a) General. No form of trap whose seal
<br />depends upon the action of movable parts
<br />shall be used. No form of trap with parti-
