A heating appliance, other than <br />a floor-mounted space heater, which con- <br />sists of a heat emitting element and fan <br />contained within a common enclosure, de- <br />signed and installed for delivery of warm <br />air for space heating directly into the <br />space. A vertical vent pipe installed <br />primarily for the purpose of providing cir- <br />culation of air to or from any part of the <br />drainage system; sometimes called a main <br />vent. <br />Vent system. A pipe or pipes installed to <br />provide a flow of air to or from a drainage <br />system or to provide a circulation of air <br />within such system to protect trap seals <br />from siphonage and back pressure. <br />Vertical pipe. Any pipe or fitting which is <br />installed in a vertical position or which <br />makes an angle of not more than 45° with <br />the vertical. <br />1517.24 Letter "~'V." <br />Wall: <br />Bearing-. A wall which supports any <br />vertical load in addition to its own weight. <br />C¢vity -. A wall built of masonry units <br />or plain concrete or a combination of these <br />materials, so arranged as to provide an <br />air space within the wall, and in which <br />the facing and backing of the wall are tied <br />together with metal ties. <br />Common -. A wall owned by one person <br />but jointly used by two persons. <br />Curtain -. An exterior nonbearing wall <br />between columns or piers but not sup- <br />ported at each story. <br />Enclosure -. An exterior nonbearing wall <br />in skeleton construction anchored to col- <br />umns, piers, or floors, but not necessarily <br />built between columns or'piers. <br />Faced -. A masonry wall faced on one or <br />both sides usually with a material different <br />from the body of the wall, in which the <br />facing and the body are bonded so that <br />they will act as a unit under loads. <br />Fire -. A wall which subdivides a build- <br />' ing to restrict the spread of fire and starts <br />at the foundation and extends continuously <br />through all stories to and above the roof. <br />Fire-division -. A wall which subdivides <br />a building to restrict the spread of fire but <br />not necessarily continuing through all <br />stories nor extending through the roof. <br />Foundation-. Any bearing wall below <br />the first-floor construction. <br />Hollow - o f masonry. A wall built of <br />masonry units so arranged as to provide an <br />air space within the wall, and in which <br />the facing and backing of the wall are tied <br />together with metal ties. <br />Nonbearing -. A wall which does not <br />support any vertical load other than its <br />own weight. <br />Panel -, A nonbearing wall in skeleton <br />construction built between columns or <br />piers and wholly supported at each story. <br />Parapet -. That part of an exterior, party, <br />or fire wall extending above the roof line. <br />Party-. A wall used jointly by two per- <br />sons under an agreement or being jointly <br />owned and erected at or upon a line sepa- <br />rating two parcels of land that are held <br />under different ownership, Compare: <br />Wall, common. ' <br />Retaining-, Any wall subjected to lateral <br />pressure other than wind pressure, usually <br />supporting a bank of earth. <br />Veneered-. A wall with masonry or <br />other facing, which is attached to but not <br />bonded so as to form an integral part of the <br />wall for purposes of load bearing and sta- <br />bility. Compare: Wall: faced. <br />Wallboard. Wood pulp, vegetable fiber, <br />gypsum, or similar materials made into <br />large rigid sheets that may be fastened to <br />the frame of a building to provide sheath- <br />ing or asurface finish. <br />Warm air heating panel. A plenum or cham- <br />ber through which heated air is circulated <br />and of which one or more surfaces are <br />exposed to the space or spaces to be heated. <br />Warm air heating system. A heating system <br />which utilizes warm air as a heat trans- <br />mitting and distributive medium and shall <br />be deemed to include all appliances and <br />equipment used for heating and condition- <br />ing the air and for transmitting and dis- <br />tributing it, including the furnace, heat ex- <br />changer, fan, filters, humidifiers, controls, <br />supply and return ducts and fittings, regis- <br />
