§ 1591.44
DWELLING HOUSE CODE
96
(q) Passing through combustible walls or
partitions. Where warm air supply pipes or
ducts pass through a wall or partition of com-
bustible construction, they shall be installed
as specified in subsection (p) of this Section.
A metal thimble may be used to provide the
double wall if the space between the pipe or
duct and the thimble is not less than 1 inch.
This space may be filled with noncombus-
tible material or closed with metal collars.
(r) Uniform pitch upward from furnace.
On gravity warm air heating systems, all
warm air supply pipes and ducts shall have
a uniform upward pitch from the furnace
of not less than 1/16 inch per running foot.
1591.44 Return air pipes or ducts on warm
air heating systems..
(a) Materials. Except as provided by sub-
section (b) of this Section, return air pipes
or ducts shall be constructed of metal, or of
nominal l inch wood boards, or other equiv-
alent material, provided that no material
more flammable than 1 inch wood boards
shall be used.
(b) Construction near furnace. Portions
of such return air pipes or ducts closer than
6 feet from any heated surface of a furnace
shall be constructed as required for warm
air supply pipes or ducts.
(c) Using spaces between studs or joists.
Where spaces between studs in walls or
partitions, or spaces between joists in floors,
are used as return air ducts, the portions of
such spaces so used shall be cut off from all
remaining unused portions by tight fitting
stops of sheet metal, or of wood not less than
2 inches thick.
(d) Noncombustible lining. The interior
of combustible return air ducts shall be lined
with noncombustible material at points
where it is determined by the Building Offi-
cial that there might be danger from incan-
descent particles dropped through the regis-
ter or heater, including, but not limited to,
directly under floor registers and at the bot-
tom of vertical ducts, or directly under
heaters having a bottom return.
(e) Ope~aings in vertical stacks. No ver-
tical stack shall have openings to receive re-
turn air on more than one floor.
(f) Open-ended return air drops. Return
air may be conducted to the furnace through
open-ended return air drops terminated close
to the floor level of the space within which
the furnace is installed, utilizing such space
as a plenum for return air, and except that
underfloor spaces may be used as ducts for
return of air from rooms directly above when
such underfloor spaces are not over 2 feet in
height to the bottom of floor. joists and are
cleaned of all combustible material and are
tightly and firmly enclosed.
(g) Return air ducts in a gravity system.
In gravity warm air heating systems, the top
of the return air openings in the furnace
casing shall be not higher than the level of
the combustion zone within the furnace un-
less the return air openings are shielded in a
manner approved by the Building Official
against heat radiated from the furnace. In
gravity warm air heating systems, all return
air shall be conducted toward the furnace or
plenum in which the furnace is installed, by
gravity flow and no reverse inclines or
trapped returns shall be permitted.
(h) Return air drops in a f orced warm air
system. Where open-ended return air drops
are used in connection with forced warm air
heating systems, the volume of the space in
which such return air drops are terminated
shall be not less than twice the cfm capacity
of the fan, and the air intake into the system
from such space shall be remote from any
draft-hood, barometric damper, or check
draft; or similar opening to a flue, installed
in such space, and shall be located so that
the, air stream to such intake shall not pass
over such device or opening.
1591.45 Register boxes on gravity warm air
heating systems.
(a) Existing narrow throat register boxes.
Whenever a new furnace is installed or an
existing furnace is replaced in gravity warm ,
air heating systems, any existing narrow
throat register boxes located less than one
full story height above the top of the furnace
shall be removed and replaced with wide
throat register,boxes.
(b) Narrow throat register boxes in new
installations. In new gravity warm air heat-
ing installations, narrow throat register
boxes shall not be used less than one full
story height above the level of the top of the
furnace.
(c) Registers in combustible construction.
Where registers are placed in floors or walls
of combustible construction, the register
shall be covered with 12-1b. asbestos paper
and a clear space of not less than 5/16 inch
shall be left between the sides of the regis-
ter box and any combustible material.
1591.46 Required air supply to warm air
heating systems.
Whenever a new warm air furnace is in-
stalled or an existing warm air furnace is
29 National Standards § 1521.10
C 55-37 Standard Specifications for Concrete Building Brick.
C 56-50 Standard Specifications for Structural Clay Non-Load-Bearing Tile,
C 61-50 Standard Specifications for Keene's Cement.
C 62-50 Standard Specifications for Building Brick (Solid Masonry Units
Made from Clay or Shale) .
C" 73-51 Standard Specifications for Sand-Lime Building Brick.
C 90-44 Standard Specifications for Hollow Load-Bearing Concrete Masonry
Units.
C 91-51 Standard Specifications for Masonry Cement.
C 126-50T Tentative Specifications for Ceramic Glazed Structural Clay Facing
Tile, Facing Brick, and Solid Masonry Units.
C 129-39 Standard Specifications for Hollow Non-Load-Bearing Concrete

~ Masonry Units.
;
;
C 130-42
Standard Specifications for Lightweight Aggregate for Concrete.
C 141-42 Standard Specifications for Hydraulic Hydrated Lime for Struc-
tural Purposes.
C 144-44 Standard Specifications for Aggregate for Masonry Mortar.
C 145-40 Standard Specifications for Solid Load-Bearing Concrete Masonry
Units.
C 150-49 Standard Specifications for Portland Cement.
C 161-44T Tentative Specifications for Mortar for Reinforced Brick Masonry.
C 175-51T Tentative Specifications for Air-Entraining Portland Cement.
C 192-49 Standard Method of Making and Curing Concrete Compression and
Flexure Test Specimens in the Laboratory.
® ~ C 200-50T ~ Tentative Specification for Extra Strength Clay Pipe.
C 205-51T Tentative Specifications for Portland Blast-Furnace Slag Cement.
C 206-49 Standard Specifications for Special Finishing Hydrated Lime,
C 207-49 Standard Specifications for Hydrated Lime for Masonry Purposes.
C 212-50T Tentative Specifications for Structural Clay Facing Tile.
C 216-50 - Standard Specifications for Facing Brick (Solid Masonry Unit Made
of Clay or Shale).
