§ 1591.43 DWELLING HOUSE CODE 94
of this Section shall not apply when auto-
matically controlled oil or gas-fired furnaces
are installed and the combustion rate is ad-
justed so that the heat input, irrespective of
furnace size, cannot exceed the heat loss
of the building with outdoor temperature of
-5 F and wind velocity of 15 mph, provided
the warm air pipe or duct areas and the free
areas of registers and grilles are adequate to
convey and discharge the warm air required
to heat the building.
(d) Exception for existing buildings. The
provisions of (a) and (b) of this Section
shall not apply when automatically con-
trolled furnaces are installed in an existing
building and it is determined by the Board
of Building Code Appeals that strict enforce-
ment of the provisions of (a) and (b) of this
Section would result in undue hardship, pro-
vided that the heat input into the furnace
is. controlled by a temperature limit control
and a room thermostat so that the bonnet
temperature will not exceed 200 F, and pro-
vided further that the warm air pipe or duct'
areas and the areas of registers and grilles
are adequate to convey and discharge the
heat delivered by the furnace when so con-
trolled.
1591.43 Warm air supply ducts and connec-
tions.
(a) Warm air pipe and duct requirements.
All warm air distributing pipes or ducts
from the furnace or heater shall be con-
structed entirely of noncombustible material
equivalent in structural strength and dura-
bility to the following:
WARM AIR DISTRIBUTING PIPES
Diameter, Minimum Minimum Thickness Minimum Thickness
Inches Weight of Tin of Galvanized Iron of -Aluminum
Less than 12 IC (107 lb,) 30 U. S. Gage 26 B. & S. Gage
12 or more IX (135 lb.) 28 U. S, Gage 26 B. & S. Gage
WARM AIR DISTRIBUTING DUCTS
Minimum Thickness Minimum Thickness
Width, Inches o f Galvanized Iron o f Aluminum
14 or less 28 U. S. Gage 26 B. & S. Gage
over 14 to 36 26 U. S, Gage 24 B. & S. Gage
over 36 24 U, S. Gage 22 B. & S. Gage
(b) Warm air riser requirements. Warm tural strength and durability to the follow-
air risers shall be constructed entirely of ing:
noncombustible material equivalent in struc-
WARM AIR RISERS
Width, Minimum Minimum Thickness Minimum Thickness
Inches Weight of Tin of Galvanized Iron of Aluminum
14 or less IC (107 lb.) 30 U. S: Gage 2G B. & S. Gage
over 14 IX (135 lb,) 28 U. S. Gage 26 B. & S. Gage
(c) Construction. All warm air supply
pipes, ducts, fittings, and register boxes shall
be secured in place and constructed so as not
to obstruct air flow. Transition connections
shall be used for runs connected to boots,
Pipes and ducts shall be securely supported
by metal hangers; straps, lugs, or brackets.
No nails shall be driven through pipe or duct
walls. ,
(d) Joints and seams.- Joints and seams
of pipes and ducts shall be securely fastened
and made substantially air tight. Slip joints
shall have a lap of at least 1~/z inches and
shall be fastened and sealed in a manner
approved by the Building Official.
(e) Insulation. Warm air supply pipes or
ducts which pass through any unheated
space shall be insulated with a minimum of
3-ply asbestos air-cell covering or its equiv-
alent.
(f) Linings. Linings used inside of pipes
or ducts shall be fire-resistive.
(g) In outside walls. Registers for warm
air, and warm air pipes, stacks or fittings
shall not be located in outside walls unless
insulated on the cold side with a minimum
of 1 inch asbestos air-cell covering or its
equivalent.
(h) Shutters and dampers. Warm air heat-
ing systems, other than systems which are
automatically fired with oil or gas and have
approved temperature limit controls, shall
have at. least one register or grille without
a closeable shutter and the duct leading
fraction thereof of the total distance around
the room, measured horizontally along the
wall at the floor line. The receptacle out-
lets shall be, insofar as practicable, spaced
equal distances apart around the perimeter
of such room. At least one receptacle out-
let shall be installed for the connection of
the laundry appliance. This receptacle shall
be of a 3-pole type designed for grounding
the appliance. A suitable approved ground
conductor shall be extended from such re-
ceptacle to a grounding connection. All re-
ceptacle outlets installed on the outside face
of a building, or in any manner outside the
building, shall be of the 3-pole weatherproof
type.
(d} Paragraph 3202, entitled USE, of
Article 320, shall be considered as amended
and as amended shall read:
"Open wiring on insulators shall not be
used in basements, cellars, storage spaces,
or in habitable rooms or in any location,
not a concealed space, where the installa-
§ 1521.15
tion of open wiring on insulators would be
hazardous."'
(e) Paragraph 3342, entitled USE, of
Article 334, shall be considered as amended
by adding at the end thereof, the following:
"Armored cable shall not be installed so
as to be exposed where subject to mechan-
ical injury. Exposed armored cable mounted
on wall surfaces and within 4 feet of the
floor level shall be, deemed to be subject to
mechanical injury unless the conditions of
installation are such that it is shielded from
mechanical injury."
(f) Paragraph 3441, entitled, USE, of
Article 344, shall., be considered as amended
and as amended shall read:
"Underplaster extensions, installed as per-
mitted by Sections 3441 to 3444 inclusive,
may be used only for extensions of existing
branch circuits, if laid on the face of ma-
sonry or other material and buried in the
plaster finish of ceilings or walls."
