All piping conveying
non-potable water shall be adequately and
durably identified by a distinctive yellow
paint and by signs prominently affixed at all
locations where error of utilization might be
made so that it can be readily distinguished
from piping carrying potable water. Potable
and non-potable water supply shall be dis-
tributed through systems entirely independ-
ent of each other, and any cross connection
between such supplies is prohibited.
1525.06 Water supply line.
All pipe used to carry potable water shall
be of new durable material, installed without
damage to structural members. The service
pipe from the street main shall be not less
than 3/a inch nominal diameter of non-ferrous
material or not less than 11/z inch nominal
diameter of extra-heavy galvanized wrought-
iron pipe. All water. piping shall be pro-
tected against freezing and shall be properly
sloped to drain valves so as to permit drain-
36 •
age of the entire system within the building.
Separate accessible stop-cocks or valves shall
be placed at the foot of each riser line, on
all branches to exterior hose connections and
hot water storage tanks, and on supplies to
fixtures or groups of fixtures not connected
to riser lines. A main shut-off valve on the
main water supply line serving each dwell-
ing unit shall be provided near the curb and
a shut-off valve with drip shall be placed in
a readily accessible location within the build-
ing. Supply lines taken from pressure or
gravity tanks shall be 'valved near the tank.
1525.07 Water pipe in trenches.
Water service pipes shall be of approved
non-corrodible material. Where service
pipes are laid in the same trench, the water
pipe shall be laid on natural shelf or on
solidly tamped backfill at a level at least 12
inches above the top of the sewer pipe. The
backfill of all trenches within the dedicated
street shall be thoroughly compacted in a
manner approved by the Building Official.
CHAPTER 27. ROOM SIZES AND LOCATION.
1527.01 Minimum area requirements.
Each dwelling unit shall contain a bath-
room and an area for each of the following
uses: living, cooking, dining and sleeping
and in addition, a cellar, basement or a util-
ityroom. The utility room shall have a mini-
mum floor area of 90 square feet, provided,
however, if the utility room has an area less
than 90 square feet, the deficient area shall
be added to the minimum required space for
cooking.
1527.02 Minimum areas.
No space intended for use as set forth be-
low shall be less in area than as indicated:
SPACE USE AxEA*
Living '___________________150 square feet
Dining ___________________ 80 square feet
Sleeping __________________100 square feet
Any additional Sleeping or
Sewing Area ___________ 80 square feet
Cooking _________________~ 60 squire feet
Living-Dining
,Combination __-_________180 square feet
.Dining-Cooking
Combination ____________110 square feet
Living-Sleeping
Combination ____________200 square feet
"Additional areas sliall be provided for the
necessary hallways' or other interconnect-
ing spaces, closets and that area occupied
by partitions.
The minimum horizontal dimension of any
habitable area, except the cooking space,
shall be 7 feet in at least 90% of the area.
For the purposes of this chapter, two ad-
joining areas shall be considered a combina-
tion space use if the area of the wall between
the two. areas is less than 25% of the open
space between such areas,
1527.03 Bathroom.
Each dwelling unit shall contain at least a
water closet, lavatory, and tub or stall
shower in a room or rooms in which the fix-
tures shall be arranged so as to provide at
least 90-degree door swing.
1527.04 Minimum ceiling height.
In each dwelling unit, the following mini-
mum ceiling heights are established:
Basement or Cellar ______________7'-0"
Main Floor, except. Bedrooms _____7'-6"
Second Floor or Bedrooms ______.7'-0"
provided that rooms with sloping ceilings
shall have a clear minimum height in at
least z/s of their area. Pressure tank feed
shall be used only with burner arranged to
prevent abnormal discharge of oil at the

' burner by automatic means specifically ap-
. proved by the Underwriters' Laboratories,
Inc. for the burner with which it is used.
(b) Supply tanks-capacity and opera-
tion. Pressure tanks shall not exceed a ca-
pacify of 60 gallons and shall not be operated
at pressures exceeding 50 psi. Pressure
tanks shall be equipped with an approved
pressure release valve.
1591.14 Underground ofll supply tanks.
Underground oil supply tanks shall be set
with the top of tank below the level of all
piping to which the tank is connected. Un-
derground tanks shall be so buried as to
have a cover of earth not less than 2 feet
thick, or not less than 1 foot of earth with a
slab of reinforced concrete not less than, 4
inches thick. The slab shall be set on firm,
well tamped earth and shall extend at least
1 foot beyond the tank in all directions.
1591.15 Oil supply tanks inside buildings.
When approved for installation inside of
building; oil tanks shall comply with the
following requirements:
i.
