No fuel-burn-
88
ing device or appliance shall be installed or
maintained without provisions for an air
supply adequate to ensure proper combus-
tion of the fuel. Where afuel-burning device
or appliance is installed or maintained in an
inside room or space, such air supply shall
be provided through ducts or openings lead-
ing to the outside air or to rooms having an
ample supply of outside air, and such ducts
or openings shall have an effective cross-
sectional area not less than the area of the
chimney; flue, smokepipe, or gas vent con-
nected to such device or appliance.
(b) Mechanical exhaust ventilation.
Where a room or space in which afuel-burn-
ing device or appliance is installed is ven-
tilated by means of mechanical exhaust ven-
tilation, air sufficient to replace that ex-
hausted and that consumed by combustion
shall be supplied from a safe, uncontami-
nated source.
(c) Precautions. Every room or space in.
which afuel-burning device or appliance is
installed shall have provisions which will
prevent unsafe air temperature rise due to
use of such device or appliance. When such
device or appliance is connected to a chim-
ney, flue, smokepipe, or gas vent, provisions
shall be made to permit the escape of the
products of combustion from the room or
space in the event of back-draft.
1591.11 Standards for installation of oil-
fired equipment.
Except as provided in Sections 1591.12 to
1591.16 inclusive, the installation of oil-burn-
ing equipment shall conform to NBFU Pam-
phlets 31 and 310, Commercial Standard CS-
75, and of Section 1591.07.
1591.12 Standards for installation of gravity
feed to oil-fired burners.
(a) ,Burner control. Gravity supply tanks
shall not exceed 275 gallons individual ca-
pacity,, nor 550 gallons :aggregate capacity.
'Where more than ,one gravity' supply tank
is used, such tanks shall be connected sepa-
rately to the feed pipe leading to the burner
or valved in such a way that only one tank
can discharge its contents at one time. Tanks,
above ground, may be installed outside
buildings if protected.from the weather and
mechanical damage,
~ ~
~'
~ ~
37
Natural Light and Ventilation
§ 1529.10
1527.05 1Vlinimum house sizes excluded.
It is not intended by the preceding four
sections to establish or create in any way
minimum house sizes.
1527;06 Cellar and basement occupancy.
No room or space in any cellar shall be
used for sleeping purposes. No room in any
basement shall be occupied as a habitable
room if a fmished floor at a required window
is more than 2'-6" below the finished grade
at the window. A recreation room in a cellar
shall not be considered as a habitable room.
CIIAPTER 29.. NATURAL LIGIiT AND VENTILATION
1529.01 General.
The lighting and ventilation of habitable
spaces shall be such as to provide satisfactory
and healthful living conditions and, in attic
and basement areas, to prevent conditions
conducive to deterioration.
1529.02 Glass area.
In determining required glass area, the
gross area within a sash including all mun-
tins shall be considered. When the sill of a
basement window is below the extended line
of the finished grade at the window, only half
of the below-grade glass area of that window
shall be included in determining the required
glass area.
1529.03 Minimum window requirements.
All habitable rooms shall be provided with
natural light by means of one.or more win-
dows orskylights or their equivalent located
in outside walls or roofs. The required glass
area in a habitable room shall be not less
than ten square feet nor ten per cent of the
floor area of the room, whichever is greater.
Not less than forty per cent of such required
glass area shall be openable for ventilation
unless mechanical ventilation is installed in
accordance with Chapter 31.
1529.04 Additional area required.
If windows open on covered. parches and
terraces, or are in rooms any portion of
which is more than eighteen feet from a win-
dow, the glass area shall be not less than
fifteen per cent of the floor area of the room.
1529.05 Bathrooms and.lavatories.
Unless proper artificial light and mechani,
cal ventilation are installed in accordance
with Chapter 31; natural `light and ventilation
for bathrooms and lavatories shall be pro-
vided by windows or skylights with a glass
area of not less than three square feet or ten
per cent of the floor area, whichever is
greater. Tlie. ventilating area shall be not
less than four per cent of the floor area. If a
compartmentcontaining any one fixture
opens directly"into-the bathroom, it shall be
considered a part of the bathroom floor area
and may be lighted artificially and ventilated
into the bathroom.
1529.06 Glazed doors.
The area of glazed portion of doors in ex-
terior walls may be included in determining
compliance with the glass area requirements;
however, an exterior door in a kitchen or
bedroom shall not be acceptable as the only
means of providing natural.ventilation.
1529.07 Alternate glazing.
Any glazing material may be used to pro-
vide natural light if the area is sufficient to
admit an amount of light equivalent to that
transmitted by the required area of clear
glass.. In no case shall the area be less than
that required for clear glass. .
1529.08 Areas below grade.
Areas below grade, other than habitable
rooms, shall be provided with natural light
and ventilation by windows or doors in ex-
terior walls with both glazed and ventilat-
ing area of not less than two per cent of the
floor area.
1529.09 I$eater room or space.
Ventilation for heater room or space shall
be provided by means of grilles, louvers, or a
duct arranged to supply air from outside or
from a permanently ventilated under-floor
or attic space, Ducts shall be screened and
have a free area at least equal to the free '
area of flues or vents to which the fuel-burn-
ing equipment is connected.
