At times ti~~rlien pipe laying is not in progress the open ends <br />shall be closed by approved means and no trench water shall be permitted <br />-to enter the pipe . <br />(c) V~LRIATIOI~?S IN DTl;L~i`?Sioi+1S: The outside diaineter~ of the spigot <br />end of be1.l-anca-spigot pipe varies v+~i.th the t-pe, size, and class of <br />pipe. There is only one joint size for each diameter of mecha.nical- <br />joint pipe. Th115, difficulty may be rret vr'trcn attempts are made to <br />connect; existing bell--ancl-spigot lines to mechanica].-joint pipe. ?~~then <br />such a connection must be made, an adapter having a fitting bell a.nd a <br />mechanical-joint socket is manufactured and may be used.- <br />~:If 'the existing line ends in a spigot, either a standard sleeve or a <br />special fitting consisting oz a bell and mechan:i.ca.1-joint soclcet may be <br />used, provided that the fitting betvreen the spigot end of the existing <br />line and the bell to be connected to it is consistent with the normal <br />fit of bell-and-spigot pipe. <br />(d) CL~~11.TA?G Ai+17 f1SSEl-]3LIi~G JOINT: Tho 1:ast 8 in. outside of the <br />spigot a:1d. inside of the bell of rnecllanical-joint piL~e shall be thorough- <br />ly cleaned to remove oil, grit, tar (other than standard coating), and <br />other foreign ii~atter from the joint, and then painted. tivith a soap solu- <br />tion made by dissolving one-half' cup of €;ranulated soap in 1 gallon of <br />water. The cast-iron gland shal]_ then be sl.ipl~ed on the s;~igot end of <br />the pipe vrith the lip extension of the gl.ancl toc,~ard the soclcet or bell <br />end. The rubber gasket shall be painted vri.th the soap solution and <br />placed on the sp:i.got end with the t:riick edge tovrar. cl the gland. <br />(e) BOLTTi1G Ol, JOI•iTt The entire section of the pipe shall be <br />pushed forvrard to seat the spigot end in the bell. The gasket shall <br />then be pressed into place tivithin the bell, being careful to have the <br />gasket evenly located around tiie entire joint. The cast-iron gland shall <br />be moved along the pipe into position for bolting, all of the bolts in- <br />serted, and the nuts scretived up tightly ~^rith the fingers. All nuts shall <br />be tightened ti~ri.th a suitable (preferably torque-limiting) vurench.
