separately, thoroughly packed and hampered into the joint. <br />Sec. 8 <br />(b) DEPTH OF JGINTIT~IG ~ATERIL~L: For lead joints a space of not <br />less than tti°so and one-half inches (2 1/2") in depth shall be left in <br />the bell in pipe of tvfenty inches (20") or less. Lead joints in <br />sleeves shall be cast solid to the full lengtTz oz sleeve. <br />(c) SP~CII~ICATI0AIS I~OR. ILAD : Lead shall be used for caulking <br />purposes and shall contain not less than 99,73; pure head. Impurities <br />shall not exceed the fol]_orring li?nits : Arsen~_c, _lr~timony ar_d Tin, <br />together -- 0.015`,x; Copper - 0.08;x, Zinc - 0,002;5; Iron - On00?_ ~; <br />Bismuth - 0.25;0. Before <br />pourinf; the lead all scum shall be removed. <br />(e) PO`31:TIOP~:i OF JOIAIT RLTAIiER: The joint runner shall fit snugly <br />against the face of the bell and the outside of the pipe ar_d shall be <br />dammed v~ri~th clay at the pouring gate to provide for filling the joint <br />even with the t',op of bell. <br />(f) CAULKIAIG LEAD JOIAITS : mach joint shall be made z~2th one pour, <br />fil]_ing the joint space. After cooling to the temperature of the pipe, <br />lead joints shall be caulked 'by means of pneumatic or hand tools, by <br />competent workmen, until thoroughly compacted making vratertight joints <br />without overstraining the bells. <br />LIAiiJ VAL~r,S <br />(a) TYPl; A1vD FITTINGS: Line valves shall be set at points in- <br />dic aced on plans . All valves shall be of a pattern approved and <br />adopted by the Division of ~"later of the City of Cleveland, and fitted <br />with boxes having square caps marked +'~;7ater Valve'+ and set to the <br />established grade of the street. Pdo. 2 bases t%rill be requirrcl for all <br />valve boxes ranging from ~.++ to 8"; loo. ~ bases must be used on boxes <br />ranging; from 10" to 16" . <br />(b) SIJTTIIII'T VAI~TES, VALUl~ BOXES, FITTII~IGS MAID BLO~~~ OFFS: Gate <br />valves and pipe fittings shall be set by Contractor and jointed to new <br />pipe as heretofore specified. Cast iron valve boxes shall be firmly <br />supported arcl maintained centered and plurdo over tl~ie v~ench nut of the <br />gate valve ~^rith box cover- flush with the surface of the finished pave- <br />ment or such other level as directed, All reared valves and such other <br />valves, as may be designated on contract drat°rin~s shall be set in mason- <br />ry valve vaults vrith the wrench nuts readily accessible for operation <br />through the iranhole opening. Vaults shall be constructed in a manner <br />that wv:ill permit minor valve repairs and afford protection to pipe from <br />impact ~~rhere it passes throv_gh the pit ?vans . <br />-9- <br />
