Ordinance No. 73- 25 <br />Introduced by: Mr. Prager <br />AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR THE AUTOMATIC EXTINGUISH- <br />MENT OF FIRE IN BUILDINGS OR PARTS OF BUILDINGS WHICH <br />BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE, CONSTRUCTION, OR OCCUPANCY, OR <br />LACK OF SUITABLE PROTECTIVE EQUIPDIENT, CONSTITUTE A <br />SPECIAL FIRE HAZARD TO LIFE OR PROPERTY OR AN <br />EXCESSIVE BURDEN UPON THE FIRE EXTINGUISHING FACILITIES <br />OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. <br />Sec. 1. Definitions <br />(a) Approved: 2deans approved by the official or <br />other authority charged with the enforcement of this Ordinance. <br />(b) Area: Means ground area of buildings, or of <br />sections of buildings di ivi ded by approved fire walls, each such section <br />being considered a separate area. <br />(c) Automatic Sprinkler Equipment: Means a system of <br />pipes with orifices to apply water automatically to fire. <br />(d) Basement: Means any story where less than half <br />the height between floor and ceiling is above the average level of street <br />or sidewalk. <br />(e) Chief of the Fire Department: Means the head of <br />the municipal Fire Department or a duly authorized deputy. <br />(f) Fire-Resistive Buildings: Means buildings in <br />which walls are of approved masonary or reinforced concrete and the <br />structural members of which have fire-resistance ratings sufficient to <br />withstand the hazard involved in the occupancy, but not less than a four- <br />hour rating for bearing walls, fire walls, party walls, isolated piers, <br />columns, and wall-supporting girders: A three-hour rating for walls and <br />girders other than above specified and for beams, floors, and roof; and a <br />two-hour rating for fire partitions: And in which all floor openings are <br />protected by effective fire-resistive enclosures. <br />(g) Fire Wall: Means a wall which subdivides a build- <br />ing or separates buildings to restrict the spread of fire. <br />- (h) Heights of Building: Means the height exclusive <br />of basement or other stories below grade. <br />Sec, 2. Authority to Adopt and Promulgate Rules <br />Authority is hereby conferred upon the Chief of the Fire <br />Department to adopt and promulgate rules based on the standards of the <br />National Fire Codes embodying details of installation and construction of <br /> <br />
