RESOLUTION 2007-05 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Rinker and Council as Whole <br />A RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING , <br />THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO SELECT <br />NORTHEAST OHIO FOR THE 2011 SUMMER WORLD GAMES <br />AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY <br />WHEREAS, the Special Olympics is an international, nonprofit group that holds <br />athletic competitions and physical fitness activities for children and adults with <br />intellectual disabilities; and <br />WHEREAS, the organization holds competitions at the local, state, national and <br />international levels with Summer and Winter World Games held every four years; and <br />WHEREAS, athletes take part in both competitive and noncompetitive events <br />including acquatics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, soccer, <br />golf, Judo, power-lifting, gymnastics, roller-skating, sailing, table tennis, team handball, <br />tennis, and volleyball; and <br />WHEREAS, more than 2.2 million people in 150 countries participate in the <br />Special Olympics annually; and <br />WHEREAS, over 4,000 people take part in Special Olympics Greater Cleveland, <br />which serves Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga Counties; and <br />WHEREAS, the Special Olympics is currently considering Northeast Ohio as the <br />venue for the 2011 Summer World Games; and <br />WHEREAS, the millions of residents of Northeast Ohio are very excited and <br />hopeful about the potential of assisting in hosting the 2011 Summer World games; and <br />WHEREAS, the Special Olympics Summer Games are estimated to bring over <br />7,000 athletes, 3,000 coaches, as well as untold thousands of family members, fans and <br />others to Northeast Ohio; and <br />WHEREAS, Northeast Ohio is known worldwide for its diversity, acceptance of <br />all people, philanthropy, hospitality, friendliness, volunteerism and passion for all sports <br />at all levels; and <br />WHEREAS, Northeast Ohioans love and care very much about their fellow man <br />and woman; and
