RESOLUTION NO. 2005-24 <br />INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Rinker and Council as a Whole. <br />A Resolution of Appreciation to the <br />Businesses and Residents of Mayfield Village, <br />Firefighter John Panaero, Firefighter Gino Carcioppo/o <br />And Police Sergeant Rick Whitehead <br />WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the coast of Louisiana <br />as a violent Category 4 storm, with sustained winds of nearly 145 miles per hour and a predicted <br />coastal storm surge of up to 28 feet. The region's levees were breached. Parts of Louisiana and a <br />substantial portion of the City of New Orleans completely inundated. Thousands were trapped. <br />Worse flooding ensued; and <br />WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina, a near catastrophic event, resulted in thousands of deaths <br />and left hundreds of thousands homeless; and <br />WHEREAS, with waters up to rooftops of homes and an urgent need for monetary <br />donations, businesses and residents in Mayfield Village, Ohio immediately came in with their <br />checks to the American Red Cross for the relief efforts; and <br />WHEREAS, Village-wide contributions totalled $3,300.00. Village Council authorized an <br />expenditure to match these donations and a check for $6,600.00 was issued to the American Red <br />Cross for the victims of Hurricane Katrina; <br />WHEREAS, with the waters rising and conditions rapidly deteriorating, Mayfield Village <br />Firefighters John Panzero and Gino Carcioppollo volunteered at the request of the Federal <br />Emergency Management Agency and on September 4, 2005, left to provide assistance to the <br />evacuees from Hurricane Katrina; and <br />WHEREAS, firefighters Panzero and Carcioppollo assisted over 10,000 households. <br />Firefighter Panzero became a division leader commanding the Roaming Division working under the <br />Incident Command System and Firefighter Carcioppollo became EMS Chief; <br />WHEREAS, amidst the rescue efforts for Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita hit St. Charles, <br />Louisiana. Firefighters Panzero and Carcioppollo assisted in the rescue efforts for that Hurricane <br />as well. <br />WHEREAS, voluntarily responding following the devastation from Hurricane Rita, Sgt. Rick <br />Whitehead of the Mayfield Village Police Department was deployed with the American Red Cross <br />to assist in Hurricane Rita's Disaster Assessment Team, where he was initially assistant to the <br />
