RESOLUTION NO. 97-06
INTRODUCED BY: MAYOR BRUCE RINKER AND COUNCIL AS A WHOLE
A RESOLUTION URGING TBE MAYFIELD CITY SCHOOL BOARD TO DELAY
ANY DECISION TO SELECT TBE SUPERINTENDENT AND ALLOW TBE
ELECTION PROCESS TO IDENTIFY TBE IlVIPORTANT ISSUES FACING TBE
SCHOOLS AND OUR COMMUlVITY
The sudden resignation of Mayfield School Superintendent David Abbott raises serious
questions about the status of the school system, what led to the resignation and what future
course the schools will take.
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council observe the following:
WHEREAS, Mayfield schools are a pu blic school system, which must serve the best
interests of the public.
WHEREAS, the Mayfield School system presently has a Superintendent who is leaving,
no Assistant Superintendent to assume responsibilities, school employees who are working
without a collective bargaining contract, 17 school administrators whose contracts have not yet
been renewed, and three of five School Board seats open for election this coming November.
WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council believe that the best interests of the community, the
school system and the families and children in the school system require complete public
disclosure and discussion defining the roles and relationship of the School Board and
Superintendent in administering the school system, so that the public can fully understand the
current philosophy and direction of the Mayfield Public Schools.
WfEREAS, the Mayor and Council believe that the decision to select a superintendent
and clarification and definition of the roles of the Superintendent and School Board are of such
fundamental public importance that the voters of the Mayfield School District are entitled to
have greater participation in the decision to select a successor Superintendent.
WHEREAS, in light of the strained relationship between the School Board, the school
administration and the school community occasioned by the events surrounding Dr. Abbott's
resignation, and given the great significance of the selection of his successor, the decision to
choose a new Superintendent should not be made by the current Board, but should be delayed
until such time as a new Board is installed following the November, 1997 elections, since the
composition of the Board and future stability of the schools will be materially affected by such
elections.
NOW, TBEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY TBE COUNCIL OF MAYFIELD VII.,LAGE,
COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO:
Mayor Rinker and Council urge the current Board to delay any decision to select the
Superintendent and allow the election process to identify the important issues facing the schools
and our community, entitle voters to a complete and fair discussion of those issues and thereby
enable an informed public to exercise the right to vote for those School Board Representatives
who will best represent their interests.
