1VIAYFIELD VILLAGE
6621 Wilson Mills Road
Mayfield Village, OH 44143
(440) 461-2210
?..
MElVIO
Date: October 10, 2003
To: Council President Buckholtz and Village Council
From: Bruce Rinker
Re: SOM Medians
I am urging Council to authorize an expenditure not to exceed 200 000 for the addition
of fully landscaped, raised median islands on S.O.M. Center Road, extending from White Road
in the north to Fisher's Tavern in the south. As the entire widening project continues, that cost
may decrease. Widening Committee had recommended landscaped medians
from White Road to Highland Road, at the time acting with the understanding that the right-of-
way width south of Highland could not feasibly accommodate landscaped medians.
In September, 2000 Council voted to limit the landscaped medians between a point
beginning somewhere north of St. Bartholomew's Church and ending just south of White Road.
A lot has happened since then. We have purchased through arm's-length transactions the
Zako, Palermo and Falkner properties that abut the west side of S.O.M.; we are in the process of
adding two new softball fields south of Parkview Pool; we have already drastically changed
Wiley Park, by removing one of the two ball fields for creation of a large detention basin and
related stream restoration that will extend to and include the Palermo property, we will add a trail
to run alongside the field and stream, and we intend to "flip" the remaining ball field to position
home plate and the infield well away from S.O.M., which will allow us to install landscaping and
buffering beyond the outfield and adjacent to residences nearby; Whitehaven Cemetery has given
us permission to run the eastside bike path into the cemetery grounds just beyond the east right-
