RESOLUTION NO. 2000-03 (as amended
INTRODUCED BY: Mayor Rinker and Council as a Whole
A RESOLUTION
IN SUPPORT OF CONTINUING TO MAINTAIN
THE FORMER RICHMOND HEIGHTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
(PHS MT. SINAI - EAST) AS A FULL SERVICE HOSPITAL
WITH EMERGENCY SERVICES
WHEREAS, Mayor Bruce G. Rinker and the Council of the Village of Mayfield are
extremely concerned with the recent announcement of the closing of the former Richmond
Heights General Hospital, now known as PHS Mt. Sinai - east; and
WHEREAS, the Richmond Heights Hospital has served the acute care, general
health care and emergency services needs of the residents of the Village of Mayfield and
the Hillcrest area for nearly forty years; and
WHEREAS, the announced closure of the hospital by Primary Health Systems
(PHS) will negatively impact the health care needs of the residents of the Village and of the
surrounding Hillcrest area, particularly those older persons Iiving in the area, and will
adversely affect emergency medical services; and
WHEREAS, the closure of this hospital will cause the loss of over 300 jobs which will
create an extreme hardship upon those affected employees and their families; and
WHEREAS, it is particularly disturbing to the Mayor and this Council that the
announced closure of the Richmond Heights Hospital is not an isolated incident but is but
one of several examples in the Cleveland area and nationwide of a reduction of providers
of hospital and other healthcare services and, therefore, a reduction in patient choice of
providers of such services at a time when the general economy of the Cleveland area and
the nation is on an upswing.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF MAYFIELD
VILLAGE, OHIO, THAT:
SECTION 1. That Mayor Bruce G. Rinker and the Council of the Village of Mayfield
strongly oppose the decision of Primary Health Systems to close its hospital in the City of
Richmond Heights and urges PHS to reconsider its deeision for the benefit of the public
health, safety and welfare.
SECTION 2. That the Mayor and this Council urge PHS, the Cleveland Clinic
Foundation, University Hospitals, and any other interested parties to personally meet with
and to work closely with the City of Richmond Heights toward the ultimate goal of
maintaining or restoring a full service hospital in that City.
