Mr. Belzer then reported that the Chief had asked for permigs-ion to <br />purchase night sticks, riot helmits and gas lcitsm Mayor Endress remarked that <br />any time you had schools in these clays there is a possibility that we could be <br />involved in a riot and be in nead of these things. These would be for police <br />use only and most municipalities tha-t do not have such equipment are ordering <br />it. Mr. Mason said that he did not thinlc we should pay out money for these <br />things at this time. Police Chief Shortle then talked with Council on the <br />thoughts in back of this request and there was a great dea]. of discussion in <br />Councilo Mro Shortle said that he hoped we would never h4ue to use anything <br />like this, but we could not wait to purchase it until we needed it,- that three <br />departmen.ts with which we,now haue mutual,aid are securing this Qquipment, <br />A Motion was made by Nir. Moti_op carried <br />Fire Chief 'Porter then Presented a letter f rom the State Fire Iiureau <br />stating that our pumper was in bad conditiona It would cost between two and <br />thsee thousand 'dollars to put it in conditiona Mr. Shaw -then rgad this,letter <br />to Council. Mr. Porter said that his main worry* was the tanlc, as it could go at <br />any time and it would mean two thousand for 'a new -tanlc on top `of the _other <br />repairs, The Motor would have to be repaired.as there was no reserve left in <br />it and no compression and.the brakes are startinb ta let gos Dirs Porter said <br />we would be away ahead if this could be replaced instead of making these repairs. <br />Mr. Shaw said that as far as the Finance-Committee was concer.ned,--there were <br />no'funds to go on and the safety and.service committee should determine.,the <br />cost of repairs and get a rough estimate of new equipment.
