172
Regular Council Meeting
6/20/94
Page Twelve
Progressive Variance Request - Color of Sign Letters and Illumination
Mr. Diemert read the motion: A motion to grant a variance to Progressive Insurance
Company from the requirement as to the color of the sign letters from white to a backlit
illuminated blue.
Mr. Fixler, seconded by 1VIr. Ferrante, made a motion to grant a variance to Progressive
Insurance Company from the requirement as to the color of the sign letters from white
to a backlit illuminated blue.
Mr. Fixler said at the last Caucus meeting, they held a discussion with Progressive. He
remembers discussion regarding what would be an acceptable reason for rejection. He
recalls some of the reasons were: it would set a precedence for other buildings or other
businesses in Mayfield Village, or, if the residents would be totally opposed to this.
That is when the idea of the model came out. It is quite clear that these residents came
forward and that probably would be the most acceptable reason of why not to grant it.
Mr. Fixler feels it is important to have in the record that Council looked at the model,
the resiclents had an opportunity to look at the model. If anyone said anyone is trying
to cause ill feelings or ill will toward Progressive, that would not be accurate.
Mayor Rinker said they are dealing with aesthetics. The Village has a height ordinance
and, historically, this community has been very much opposed to going above that.
Progressive is looking at two very sensitive issues by placing the sign in the fashion that
they want to do it. Those are fundamental points that he does not think they can get
around.
ROLL CALL: AYES: None
NAYS: All Motion Not Carried
Variance Request Rejected
Mr. Diemert said the extension of the lighting period beyond 7 p.m. to midnight is
therefore moot, so we will move onto the third one which will be the letter height
variance from 24" to 41".
Progressive Variance Request - Letter Height
Mr. Fixler, seconded by Mr. Basile, made a, motion to grant a letter height variance from
24" to 41" to Progressive Insurance Company.
Mr. Diemert said Planning and Zoning recommended this 5 to one.
