(216) 461-2210
BLASE PIETRAFESE
Mayor
December 2, 1992
Mayor Pietrafese and Council
As the fire department looks toward 1993 and future capital items, I
would like your permission to go ahead with a project we have been
working on for the past month. We are in the developmental stages of
preparing specifications for a new fire truck called a'Quint.' This is a
combination pumper and ladder truck on one chassis.
According to our master plan, we are scheduled to replace the rebuilt
1967 Ford/Young pumper. Mayfield Village bought this pumper when Mr.
Busa was mayor. Since this truck was rebuilt in 1987 we have had nothing
but problems with this repaired pumper. If you recall, this is the truck
that in 1986 the Village purchase a new chassis to attach to the 1967
body when the original gas engine failed. A local shop completed the work
on this truck. This company has since gone out of business.
This year (1992) 613 has been out of service for 10 weeks due to
problems with the water tank and engine. It cost the Village
approximately $4500.00 in repairs. We were told by Ford Motor Company
that the chassis was not designed for fire service use. Quite candidly,
this truck was designed to be a garbage truck. The rebuilding of truck 613
versus buying a new pumper was a stop gap measure to buy us time.
We are proposing a new truck that will serve the present community as
well as taking our fire department into the 21 st century. We have looked
at several communities ladder trucks outside the Hillcrest area. We are
impressed with a truck that will not only pump water, but also has a
ladder large enough to allow us to quickly get to the roof of any of our
current office and industrial buildings.
