Regular Council Meeting .
1/18/93
Page Eight
Mr. Rinker said we are going to be requesting the individuals, as approved, to come
before us on our Caucus night to field some questions and share some information with
us. There are probably a number of items about their jobs we all need to know.
Animal Warden - William Weiss - Mr. Busa, seconded by Mrs. Cinco, made a motion to
confirm the Mayor's appointment of William Weiss as Animal Warden.
ROLL CALL: AYES: Mr. Busa, Mrs. Cinco, Mr. Ferrante, Mr. Fixler, Mr. Flynn,
and Mr. RinYcer
NAYS: Mr. Basile (He said he expressed his feelings at Caucus.)
Motion Carried
Appointment Confirmed
Community Relations Coordinator - George Phillips - Mr. Busa, seconded by Mr.
Rinker, made a motion to confirm the Mayor's appointment of George Phillips as
Commixnity Relations Coordinator.
Mr. Flynn said for George's benefit, we discussed this item at Caucus. The final
consensus was that they may not approve of your yearly program but they may
possibly be interested in having you come in for a couple of sessions.
Mr. Rinker said to be frank, this was a matter of certain controversy. They had a lot of
discussion the middle of last year. He thinks the consensus as Mr. Flynn has pointed
out is that in so far as some of the ideas, the programs themselves, he does not think
people were so critical of that as they were at creating this position and justifying it in
total. There is no question they got very positive feedback on the areas Nir. Phillips is
eminently qualified in, (training, upgrading the safety forces--fire and police
departments.) Those are specific skills that Mr. Phillips can bring to bear, and we
dvould look in the futizre on a spot basis for those particular seminars.
Mayor Pietrafese said he would like to reiterate what we talked about at Caucus. Mr.
I'hillips had a short period of time to try to get this position off the ground. I think he
has done an excellent job in certain fields and I think he needs to improve in others, but
that is something that when it starts off and it is new it is a little difficult-finding out
what people want. I think he is providing a service to us and to the communify for a
very nominal amount of money and I would hope that Council would consider giving
this thing a little time to try to take off and become a very strong position. He has done
an excellent job with the police and fire. We received a great letter from the Chief (of
Police). The people who came to the programs had very positive things to say aboufi the
programs.
