Regular Council Meeting 4/15/96
Page 18
First Readin,g of Resolution No. 96-12, entitled; "An emergency resolution informing
the Ohio Department of Transportation that the Village of Mayfield officially objects to
the increase of the speed limit on I-271 from 55 to 65 m.p.h." Introduced by Mayor
Rinker and Council as a Whole.
Mrs. Cinco, seconded by Mr. Busa, made a motion to adopt Resolution No. 96-12.
Council President Fixler requested that the memo from Chief Stevens become part of
the minutes. He asked Chief Stevens to explain his recommendation.
Chief Stevens said the Police Department recommends staying at 55 mph.
Dr. Parker asked why the State would like uniformity throughout the system.
Chief Stevens said he believes the higher speed creates a higher frequency and severity
of accidents. He said there is no different speed limit for the express lanes; the speed on
the express lanes will be the same as the outside lanes.
Mr. Busa said very few people obey the 55 mph limit. Dr. Parker asked how much the survey will cost and if we will be able to complete it on
time.
Chief Stevens said he can't see where it will cost an exorbitant amount--the time will be
invested by officers. They will strive to get it done on time.
Roll Call: AYES: Mrs. Cinco, Mr. Marquardt and Dr. Parker
NAYS: Mr. Buckholtz, Mr. Busa, Mr. Ferrante and Mr. Fixler
Motion Not Carried
Resolution Failed
OPEN PORTION - 3 minute limit imposed by Chair.
