Regular Council Meeting
February 15,1999
Page 9
OPEN PORTION - 3 minute limit imposed by Chair. Those who wish to speak must first state their
name and address. This open portion is limited to discussion pertaining to the items under "New
Business" only.
There were no comments.
ANY OTHER MATTER THAT MAY COME BEFORE COUNCIL
Night Swimming Lighting
Ken Muhlbach of Brandstetter, Carroll, Zofcin (in the audience) said he needs some direction as to
what the Village's intentions are regarding night swimming. The contractor would need to do some
things now as part of the contract rather than have to redo things later on. They are moving and we
don't want to get backed up.
Council President Marquardt asked him to enlighten everyone.
Mr. Muhlbach asked if everyone had seen the letter from Night Vision. Our original conversation
was for a,cost of around $47,000. The provisions in the contract include 12 single-head area lights;
20' poles. The night swimming was 50' poles with sport light fixtures on each which will cost
$47,000. He met with representatives of Night Vision to coordinate the street lighting, the parking
lot lighting, et cetera. They d'iscussed some options to light the pool. They looked at underwater
lighting which is about $3,000 per fixture and we would still need the area lights. It is probably cost
prohibitive_to go that direction. He referenced the 4?' paragraph of the letter. We are approximating
a credit of around $30,000 for the 12 area lights so we are looking at a difference of $46,000. Then,
to upgrade the night lighting which would be the same fixture (a decorative fixture on a pole with 2-
3 spotiights on top) woutd be another $60,500. At our meeting last week, we discussed the option of
going with a_similar, less expensive fixture. His conversations with Night Vision indicated that the
savings would be about $5-6,000 overall. We could pursue some other options but as the contractors
start excavating, they will start putting conduit and wire in. So we don't get backed up, we need to
know what the Viilage's thoughts are for the future.
Mr. Brett said he assumed that lighting and swimming at night had been put on hold. He assumed
the contract for the pool included the area lights not inside the parking lot--and asked if that was
correct.
Mr. Muhlbach said the contract for the pool includes 4 head lights in the parking lot and 12 poles
with single heads as security lighting in the pool site. It is within the pool fenced area but does not
address the issues of Night Swimming.
Mr. Brett asked for clarification on whether the $30,000 was for the light fixtures for the parking lot.
Mr. Muhlbach said we have not received a concrete number from the contractor but we are assuming
it will be about the same-430,000.
