Regular Council Meeting
4/24/95
Page Sixteen
ROLL CALL: AYES: All
NAYS: None
Motion Carried
Authorization Given
Teff Corl of Chesterland - re: volleyball courts• construction til2s• sand v grass - Mr. Corl
said he was asked by Pat to come up to answer any questions they may have on grass
versus sand.
Mayor Rinker said when we had talked to the Service Director about the drainage for
the court, he was concerned it must be laid sufficiently deep so in the event we went
with a sand court, the drainage would not get in the way of that. One of the questions is
what kind of depth and base do we need for sand. He asked Mr. Corl to give them a
sense of how successful or how difficult it is to maintain a sand court in northeast Ohio
year round.
Mr. Corl said there is virtually no difficulty. It is almost maintenance free other than
raking the sand back to the center occasionally. It is ready to play immediately after
rain. It is soft all the time; they won't get hurt. They may track a little sand out and you
may have to replenish it every year (maybe 5-6 tons.) They have never had any
problems with kids throwing sand. One court is 50 x 80 (the actual volleyball is 30 x 60,
so you have a 10' cushion.) The other court is 42 or 43 by 75. You have to have a lot of
room for them to run around. There is a lot of physical activity. They have no
problems with animals or vandalism. It is much easier to take care of than grass. Grass
can be slippery; you can't play if there is a dew. They usually play in their bare feet.
Mr. Buckholtz asked if 12" is the correct depth for the sand.
Mr. Corl said yes, at least. It is supposed to represent a beach. Sand will drain much
better than grass.
Mr. Buckholtz said it was dug at 24". Gus was going to put a great deal of gravel leaving
about 8".
Mayor Rinker said he could just use less gravel--12" of gravel and 12" of sand. He asked
if they needed to put any kind of moisture guard cloth in-between the layers.
Mr. Corl said the sand will drain much better than the grass.

Council thanked Mr. Corl for coming.
