MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL
AS A BOARD OF APPEALS
Mayfield Village
December 21, 1998
The Council of Mayfield Village met as a Board of Appeals on Monday, December 21, 1998, at
8:08 p.m. in the Mayfield Village Senior Center/Community Room. Council President Mark
Fixler presided.
ROLL CALL: Present: Mr. Buckholtz, Mr. Busa, Mrs. Cinco, Mr. Fixler,
Mr. Marquardt, Mrs. Mills and Dr. Parker
Absent: None
Also Present: Mr. Brett, Mr. Cappello, Mr. Diemert, Mr. Hovancsek,
Mr. Metzung, Lt. Porter, Mr. Samac, Sgt. Det. Smith
and Mrs. Roman
Consideration of Variance Request for Aladdin's
Council President Fixler said this meeting was called to consider variance requests for Aladdin's.
He asked if the representatives were here.
Mr. Samac said the owners of Aladdin's are here. They are requesting Council reverse the
_ decision of the Board of Appeals and grant them permission to provide two illuminated signs in
their windows at their restaurant across the street (775 S.O.M. Center.) The variance is two-fold:
one for illuminated signs in the window; the other for a neon sign outside or visible in window.
Their hardship is that the facade and windows of the building are very dark and it appears the
premises are closed during the daylight hours because there is virtually no light from within the
restaurant that can be seen from the street.
Council President Fixler asked where they purchased the signs and whether they ever indicated a
permit would be required.
Mr. Chamoun said they purchased them out of Mentor; they have them at all their Aladdin's.
They have never needed a variance for any of their Aladdin's or Little Caesar's. Since the lights
have been turned off for a few days, customers have come into ask if they are open or closed.
They never felt it would be a problem or distraction for drivers since it is quite a distance from
the street.
Council President Fixler said he does not look at Aladdin's owners to blame; he looks to the sign
company. Typically speaking sign companies know you must get a permit prior to installing any
sign.
Mr. Metzung arrived at this time (8:10 p.m.)
