Council as BOA
12-21-98
Page 2 '
Mrs. Mills said when there were problems with the dry cleaners and other establishments, their
signs had to be removed. She thinks we would be amiss by letting these signs stay. No sign
permit was taken, Planning and Zoning did not review this. It went to the Board of Appeals
which is the true nature of how it should be done.
Mr. Buckholtz said with respect to the Board of Appeals and Village ordinances that he
welcomes the restaurant to the Village. He thinks it is an asset to the Village. He thinks the
ordinance on the books is fine because it allows Village officials to`'take each situation as it
comes. He would argue that just because one is approved, the whole town will go neon. The
signs are delicate and non-obtrusive. The Village is changing and SOM is growing and he does
not think two little signs are offensive.
Council President Fixler asked Mr. Samac what he anticipated the request for signs would be if
Council overturned the Board of Appeals' decision to grant the variance. He feels that once we
do for one, we will not be able to not do.for someone else.
Mr. Samac said perhaps. He cited his experience. in the last 5 years with signs at Michelle
Cleaners and Revco. He would guess that 4-6 businesses may request signs.
Council President Fixler asked if Aladdin's greatest concern was during the daytime.
Mr. Chamoun said during the daytime and at night. It helps during both.
Mr. and Mrs. Chamoun said because of the way the other businesses are structured, their neon
signs can be seen from outside their buildings.
Council President Fixler asked if there was another way to illuminate the overhead sign to give
the appearance that they are open.
Mr. Chamoun said he is not sure what else they can do on the outside.
Council President Fixler asked if they had light dropped from the peak down onto the sign--if
that might help.
Dr. Parker questioned how long the sign was up.
Mr. Chamoun said about 3 months.
Dr. Parker asked if, during that time, the Village has received requests from others who want to
place neon signs.
Mr. Samad said he received one call questioning;~thether tl~e Village had changed its ordinarice
to allow neon signs.
