Regular Council Meeting
12-13-99
Page 3
more property from the east side of the street. Because they will still have that 30' right-of--way
from the existing center line of the road to the east. So, I think the people that you are not
impacting now, and that a lot of them are not here because you are not impacting them, don't
realize that in the future you may be impacting them by widening the road to the east and putting
the road right in their front yard. Mayor Rinker said that eventually when this road gets
widened, the speed limit will have to be raised. You are talking about a residential street here
whether you have 3 lanes, S lanes, 41anes, six lanes--is still a residential street. The reason he
gave was that it is a state highway. Mayfield Road is a U.S. highway and it's 25 through South
Euclid, so I don't think we have to raise the speed limit. In fact, I think it should be lowered to
25 through the Village. The people that drive that road right now are going 45-50 sometimes and
there is nothing there to stop them. If you make it 5 lanes wide, it will be an I-271 bypass--and
that's what it's used for right now. Like the man up front. here said, if you want to widen the road
and put some trees along it, put them along the sides. Build mounds up on the sides of the road.
Why put it in the middle--you still have to look at 2 lanes of traffic? You may have a tree in the
middle, but you are still going to see all 4 lanes of traffic. That tree in the middle isn't going to
do anything for you. Build mounds up on the sides of the road and plant trees on those and give
the residents some privacy.
Don Abate. 545 S.O.M. Center Road, said my wife and I initially drafted a letter and sent it to
each member of Council. We had advocated for the 6 lanes initially. It has been very
frustrating--we have attended meeting after meeting and what we've found out is when you talk
with one of the engineers, you heard one side. The Mayor was by our property and they did
mark where there was potential impact. He saw that. My wife called one of the members of
Council, spoke with him, got his opinion. We had another member of Council over and got his
opinion. It seemed like there were different opinions being expressed on the impact. My main
concern at this point is, and I know the intent is to consider only the width of the road at this
meeting, let's also take into consideration (and that other gentleman spoke to going to the west
side only) well there's a proposal right now on the board that says they might shift the center lane
south ofHighland--S.O.M. might be shifted to the east. That directly affects Dan's house, Jerry's
and mine very much. So, we are expressing that concern. We would hope that some kind of
vote would be framed with that kept in mind.
Allan Daniels, said I rent. My landlord is Eugene DeMichael who is a plumber and has a
business out of my residence. Next to me, is Ken's Auto Body and right next to that is
Hollywood Limousine. If you put a median strip down, we will be forced to turn into something
and try to turn around and come back to our driveway. I don't know how many of you drive a
truck, or try to, with a trailer or car attached to it. It's not easy. These people are next to me--
they don't pose any problems--during the past 2-1/2 years I've been there. I can't foresee having
to put anything extra in there. A turning lane wouldn't do a whole lot of good for the area but a
median strip would put more of a hindrance to us because we could not turn. We would have to
make a u-turn and come back--for a car, it's one thing; for a truck or anything else, you couldn't
do it. It's not possible. The other question I have to ask is what about the bike path? Do you
have any idea of what or where it would be?
