77
MINUTES OF A SPECIAL MEETING OF COUNCIL AS A BOARD OF APPEALS
Village of Mayf ield
June 6, 1983
The Council of the Vil'lage of Mayfield met in Special Session as a Board
of Appeals, on Monday, June 6, 1983 at 8:10 p.m. in the Village Hall.
Council President, Vince J. Busa, presided.
Roll Call: Present: Messrs., Busa, Carmen, Etzler, Spellman, Mrs. Bloom,
and Mrs. Hanus
Absent : Mr. Flynn
Also Present Were . Mayor Beebe, Messrs., Amendola, Feneli, Hovancsek, and
Toth
Mr. Busa said Councilman Flynn is excused from a.ttendance at this meeting
because he had other commitments.
Mr. Feneli explained the new owners of the Hardware Store have requested a
sign variance. In addition to the sign to be placed on the front of their
building they would like to place a sign on the north side of their building.
The Board of Appeals determined that Council should issue the final decision
on this matter.
Mro Amendola explained the Building Code regulations for signs. A sign on
the front of their building is permissible, however, the owners have requested
a 3' x 3' non-illuminated sign to be placed flat against the north side of
their building. Under our code'this would require a variance.
Mr. Amendola said that at Council"s request he contacted the adjacent property
owner to see if he had any objection to the proposal. He received a reply.from
the owner stating that he had no objections to the proposal providing it follows
Village ordinances and does not project out from the building. The renter of
the property was not contacted as to his opinion.
Mr. Busa asked if there were any comments from Council.
Mr. Etzler commented that from prior discussions he understood the sign that
Mr. Stoner plans to use in the front of his building is a 3 ft. x 6 ft. sign
that has the Sentry Hardware trademark. Under our code, this would not be
near the square footage he is permitted to use. Therefore, Mr. Stoner requested
to use a portion of the remaining footage on the side of his building.
Mr. Carmen asked Mra Amendola if he.felt other businesses in the Village would
request a similar qariance if this variance was granted.
Mr. Amendola said the possibility exists that such a request would be made.
Fox Drug made a similar request several years ago and their request was denied.
