82
Mr. Bob Weber, Preformed Line Products., 660 Beta Drive -"said that their
company is most concerned with the health of their employees and
families., They are a self-insured company. They have taken steps
regarding smoking through a level of cooperation which is working we11 to
eliminate smoking all together. They have set up a program for non-
smoking. Fifteen emplbyees:.have stayed off cigarettes for a year, and
they only have about 15 smoking employees. Their goal is to eliminate
smoking all together. He said they are taking steps and action within
their company to remedy the problem. He said he appreciates the concern of
the Village, but believes it is their problem. He said that some of
the employees after reading some of the newspaper articles commented
that Mayfi2ld Village was more concerned about their health than the
company was. Also, some of the people who were going.to become.vol-
untarily involved in their program read that it would be mandated by the
Village and sort of resent that. They only have two residents from
Mayfield Village. The question came up, if this were to go through.:.
how far else can they go? He feels their company is taking steps that
go alot furthe:r than what we are talking about. Mr. George Black, Walnut Drive, Office in Georgian Center - said they only
have small office with four employees. They do not allow smoking in
their office. He is sympathetic with the ordinance and would like to know
how it would be enforced. He feels if it is passed, the budgetary needs
would need to be considered; it might be more than the Village thinks.
Mr. Dan Spruill; Metropolitan Insurance, 6501 Wilson Mills Road - said
they have an official company position on a smoking policy. He gave
copies to Council. A copy will be attached to these.minutes.
Mr. Julius Paris - said this is essentially the same ordinance brought
to Cleveland. He feels that politically they are trying to get smaller
suburbs to pass it in order to work on Cleveland. They-:came to Mayfield
Village to get away from harassment, political.intrigue, etc. He said
a meeting was held with the businesses and•they do not want to be used
as a wedge. He questioned the urgency of enacting such legislation in
Mayfield Village. He feels that Mayfield Village-should let Cleveland.
fight it out and see what comes from that. He does not think that private
industry wants to be harassed. Mr. Paris said he feels it could affect
business here, that they would move to other suburbs. Why not wait and
see what happens in the greater city? If. Mayfield Village decides to
start this practice, they should slowly by starting public places firsta
The last place it should be started is within private".industry.
Mrs. Jane Petschauer, 696 Meadowood - said that she hates to liken Mayfield
Village to Cleveland. She applauds the businesses foz trying to help
employees not to be smokers, but that it is something that is the indiuiduals
concern. She feels the non?smokers must be considered. She said that she
has friends that work in offices in Mayfield Village who have told her
that there are no provisions for smokers and non-smokers. They sit in an
office and the non-smokers must go to another aream She is concerned about
them and the places that she must frequent. . A1ot of businesses in the
Village do not have smoking in them. She feels that it is important to
consider the non-smoker as well as the smokers rights, and give them both
