MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF COUNCIL
Mayfield Village
July 17, 1989
The Council of Mayfield Village met in Regular Session on Monday, July
17, 1989, at eight o'clock (8 p.m.) in the Council Chambers at the
Mayfield Village Hall. Council President Santo Basile presided.
Roll Call: Present: Mr. Basile, Mrs. Cinco, Mr. Flynn, Mrs. Mills,
Mr. Petschauer, Mr. Rinker, and Mr. Santoro
Also Present Were . Mayor Carmen, Mr. Amendola, Mr. Hovancsek, Mr.
Patrick, Mr. Ramos, Chief Mohr, Chief Stevens,
and Miss Heath.
OPEN PORTION
David Hoehnen, 750 Robley Lane, said that he has lived here for 20
years and that he wants to commend Mayor Carmen and Council for
the resolution they passed in April supporting Fair Housing Month and
for forming a Fair Housing Committee. He said that some people
question the need for a fair housing ordinance in this community. Mr.
Hoehnen said that he's not sure that it is necessary from the
standpoint of being important to enforce the housing rights of
individuals that might be violated but he does think in context of the
Metropolitan area which is the most segregated metropolitan area in
this entire country, and in the context of a community metropolitan-
wide where we have been witnessing an increased number of racial
incidents between black and whites he thinks it is timely for a
overwhelmingly white community to speak out in favor of fair housing.
He said that fair housing is not a poverty issue and we are not talking
about low income housing. Fair housing simply means equal fair housing
opportunities; two people black and white with equal means have the
same ability to acquire any home or rent any apartment in Mayfield
Village. Mr. Hoehnen said that is the law of the land, Federal law,
State law, and because we have Federal and State law we probably don't
need the ordinance to enforce the rights of a would-be homeowner in
Mayfield Village but it makes an extremely important statement. He
said that he applauds Mayor and Council for what they've done and
encourage them to proceed further to keep the Fair Housing Committee
intact and to pursue these issues. Mr. Hoehnen said that he would
support anything they do and will help in any way he can.
CONSIDERATION OF MINUTES
Regular Meeting of Council - June 19, 1989 - Mr. Flynn, seconded by Mr.
Basile, made a motion to approve the minnutes.
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None Motion Carried
Minutes Approved
Special Meeting of Council - June 26, 1989 - Mrs. Cinco, seconded by
Mr. Rinker, made a motion to approve the minutes.
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None Motion Carried
Minutes Approved '
