Regular Council Meeting
10/16/89
Page 11
right next to me who is going to get the most benefit when it comes
down to making a decision. Are you going to choose me over your own
son?
Mr. Basile asked Mr. Myers how long he has been with the department.
Mr. Myers said in about four days he will be here three years.
Mr. Basile asked how long Jim has been with the deparment.
Mr. Myers said apparently 14 years.
Mr. Amendola said 15.
Mr. Myers said my question to you is whenever there is a question to be
brought up to Gus Amendola I am supposed to be able, and it has been on
numerous occasions, you are to assume that when one person is gone
there is another person in charge. What do you do if you can't even
find them? '
Mayor Carmen said that as we have talked about before, since he and
Council are not experts in the building/service field, we all have to
put our trust and faith in our department heads. He said while he
might not always agree with the decisions they make, invariably he will
defer to them if it is in their area of expertise. Mayor Carmen said
the fact that Mr. Myers is a 3-year employee and Jimmy Amendola is a
15-employee does not mean a whole lot to him other than the fact that
he puts a lot of stock in what Gus tells him in terms of who the
experienced people are and who can do particular tasks within the
department. Mayor Carmen said that when Mr. Amendola says he thinks
the job is being handled adequately without an Assistant Service
Director at this point, that's good enough for him. Mayor Carmen said
with respect to the issues of lack of communication and how do I find
my immediate supervisor, and there have not been meetings,
communication is a two-way street. He said his directive was that when
Jeff has a problem he shou-ld go see Gus and when Gus has something to
tell Jeff; to find him and talk to him. Mayor Carmen said there is one
captain of every ship. In the Mayfield Village Service Department, it
is Gus Amendola. He tells you the way it gets done, you.can input into
that and give him suggestions to the way you think it should be done.
Hopefully he will make decisions taking into account the input you give
him. In the final analysis, it is Gus Amendola who is going to make:
the decision on which way the department goes. There are 2 choices;
one is that I can live with that, or choice 2 is that I can't live with
that and will better put my skills to use elsewhere.
Mr. Myers said he understands that but his point is, isn't it better to
share a certain amount of information than to have it funneled and to
have the whole department better as a whole than to funnel all the
information to one person.
