Regular Council Meeting
10/16/89
Page 10
Mr. Rinker said that they are looking for a proper way to show their
support for Gus.
Mr. Flynn said he does not feel the question is of respect or not
respect for Gus. He said there was a legally established test
scheduled for the Assistant Service Director by the Civil Service
Commission. They then received a letter stating that the majority of
Council wanted to reconsider which he is not quite sure is true.
Mayor Carmen explained that he had written the letter to the Civil
Service Commission after a conversation with Mr. Amendola. Mr.
Amendola had indicated that he had spoken to several members of Council
who were considering abolishing the position.
Discussion was held.
Mr. Ramos suggested that this matter be taken up at the Special Council
Meeting which would give him time to research whether or not a position
may remain open.
Mayor Carmen said there is no immediate officer in the police or fire
departments. In both of those departments is what happens in the
Service Department. There is no one designated person who takes over
when the department head is absent. The department head will appoint
someone to be the "number two" person while he is gone.
Jeff Myers, a Mayfield Village Service Department employee, in the
audience, as even the Mayor just stated here, the situation does not
exist; as of last Council meeting I was instructed at this coming
Council meeting here and just listening to you people.
Mr. Basile asked who instructed him to come to Council Meeting.
Mr. Myers said that was the wrong form of words. What he was trying to
say was that when he was coming up the steps to Council meeting, Sgt.
Liggett stopped him and said he needed someone in the realm of a
Service Department employee, he had called Jimmy Amendola who was on
vacation at that time and apparently, it is hearsay, he said what do
you want me to do, I'm on vacation, and he said who do I call. The
subject pertained to a car that drove through a barricade on Beta
Drive. Mr. Myers said that he has asked his boss.for information about
this particular issue and he has been denied this. He said he had to
go to another department which he has a statement in his briefcase
stating that he is not allowed to give the information because he is
legally liable for what he puts on the road, not his boss, not his
shift cominander, but the person who sets up the job. He said that he
has tried to go through the steps and has even had a meeting with the
Mayor. He said that due to the meeting with the Mayor it was, Gus
let's have a meeting here and establish some kind of communications
within the department. That has not even been discussed or even
brought up since the day he walked out of the Mayor's office. Mr.
My.ers said common sense should tell you if I am here and your son is
