Regular Council Meeting
9-15-08
Page 2
COMMENTS FROM MAYOR RINKER:
Mayor Rinker complimented Fran Suda for the nice article which appeared in The Sun on what
has been going on in the Village regarding oil and gas well drilling. It provided a good
overview. Adding to it, Mayor Rinker reported that we received a letter from Senator Grendell's
office last week advising that tomorrow morning at 8:30 at the Mentor Civic Center on Center
Street and 615, north of Route 2 advising that he and Senator Niehaus from Columbus are going
to be present to field Q&A from local officials and others in the community. Senator Grendell,
who is never shy about public gatherings, is looking to public commentary to help convey to
Columbus the message that drilling in this area is viewed differently than it is in a lot of other
parts in the State. We also received word that tomorrow night at Lakeland Community College
at 6:30 p.m., Bainbridge Township Trustee Matthew Lynch is convening a meeting. Both
Senators are planning on being in attendance at that one as well. Bainbridge is where they had
the explosion at the end of last year. Tomorrow is gas well day for Columbus representatives in
the morning in Mentor at 8:30 and in the evening Lakeland Community College off 306, south of
I-90. Mrs. Betsa added that the morning meeting is for elected officials. The evening meeting is
public for all residents. Mrs. Betsa has made extra copies of the evening meeting in case anyone
would like a copy of the notice. Mayor Rinker reiterated his request that Council keep the
legislation as to the leases on second read. We want to get some sense of direction from our state
officials at this meeting tomorrow. Mayor Rinker is hoping to attend in the morning although he
is running into some transportation challenges. One way or the other, we will be heaxd. Mr.
Marrie stated he plans on being there.
COMMENTS FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT BUCKHOLTZ:
Council President Buckholtz has received numerous calls regarding the storm last night. Once again
accolades to our Service Department. People got up terrified about what they would find in their
yards. They found the crews already cleaning up. Keep up the good work.
DEPARTMENT HEAD REPORTS:
SERVICE - Douglas Metzung
The only thing Mr. Metzung had to report this evening concerned the storm damage. The
Service Department will b.e out collecting limbs for the better part of this week and next so that
people have the weekend to work on it. All we ask is that you get it to the curb. It does not have
to be bundled, just get it to the curb and we will handle it from that point. Mayor Rinker asked
about Joyce. Mr. Metzung reported that a large evergreen with some power lines attached to it
fell over. Mayor Rinker said he heard from a member in his law firm who lives out in
Chesterland who are without power. The response from First Energy was they had already
committed a whole slew of people down South, so they will get back when they can get to it.
You prioritize the need. Mayor Rinker asked if we have any kind of need today for the folks on
Joyce. Mr. Metzung stated that Terry Skomrock has taken the lead and has been in contact with
CEI and has asked that that be a priority since the road had to be closed.
