Regular Council Meeting
1-26-04
Page 20
?
Mr. Marrie said it was discussed before that especially one at Sandalwood facing the Fire
Department which is state controlled. Chief Dearden put in a request for a grant for a couple of
studies. Because of grant monies being cut back at the State, it was denied. Mr. Cappello got us a
cost of what we can do because we can't go to State unless we have warrant study done on
Sandalwood. I would like to look at Thornapple also. It costs approximately $1,600 -$2,000 for
a study. I would like that to be considered and possibly brought up at Caucus for discussion. The
biggest problem is on Sandalwood-and I can't speak for Thornapple but I think it's fairly close.
It isn't the tremendous volume that you see on S.O.M. but problem is and what I am requesting
for us to consider is a change on the light for the Fire Department that it would go off and on
(red/green instead of flashing) only during morning, noon and evening rush hours, the rest of
time it would stay as a flashing light the way it is now. Trying to pull out in the mornings is a
zoo. I am not requesting it because there are thousands of people coming out but I am afraid we
will have bad accident there. I have witnessed a couple of close calls; the evening seems to be
worse. It is really dangerous. I would like us to at least consider that and put in the budget to
have it done. The State won't do anything until we have a study. Pat put in for a grant but it was
denied because of the funds. Chief Mohr has also given it some study.
Mrs. Cinco asked should we wait until we are done with the road (S.O.M. widening project.)
Mr. Marrie said he wouldn't want the light to go in now because everything is torn up but that
we should get the study done now.
7?' Mrs. Cinco said with the roadwork, maybe the configuration will be different.
Mr. Marrie said it is 4lanes there now so it won't change.
Chief Dearden said I should have more definitive answers by the February Caucus. I have a
meeting arranged with a gentleman from URS who handled the engineering specs for the S.O.M.
project. Part of the project calls for replacement of that entire signal for that intersection as well
as all the other intersections along S.O.M. Part of that also includes that URS and subcontractors
are to do the necessary warranty studies to make sure that all the signals that they replace
conform with the State specifications. That study may resolve whether that intersection may be
able to facilite.
Mr. Marrie said based on that, I'd say let's do nothing iuitil you get the report from URS
Chief Dearden said we've been keeping on top of them because we have concerns with that part
of the project. In reviewing a lot of the project specifications a lot of things are corning to my
attention that we weren't aware of before-all to our benefit but certainly things we want to stay
on top of.
Mayor Rinker said we are once again putting together materials for Cleveland Magazine. While
on one hand it seems awfully superficial; on the other, we got good quite a bit of mileage out of
it just from a resident standpoint. We must get something in by Monday the 2"d. We did it in two
parts last year. We put together a pretty good pack of materials. If you have any ideas, call
Donna this week or email. We are collecting stuff. We got things from Terry, Pat, from a few
