Regular Council Minutes
9-27-04
Page 13
not be aesthetically pleasing at all or useful to serve our privacy purposes to have a 25% open
space fence for that 30'-added onto the 55' that will be for privacy. So we would request that
Council give consideration to our request for a variance on this.
Mrs. Doran said we took into consideration many factors when we approached different vendors
and tried to find exactly what we wanted to fit our needs. As we have done throughout our
planning with our house, we've put additions on; we practically rebuilt our house except for the
interior walls; we've removed most surfaces and always with Master Plan, so to speak, in mind
of having something that is aesthetically pleasing not only to ourselves and our opinion but also
to our neighbors and our neighborhood. We wanted to have something that would be low
maintenance with along-lasting 25-year warranty on it. After checking with several vendors, we
came up with a vinyl product that has a warranty on it; it is very pretty in our opinion, it is
streamlined, it is durable. What we have now is any eyesore and we should be cited to have to
take it down because it is so bad looking. What we wanted to do and in our opinion we feel that
a full privacy fence, in addition to giving us the privacy that we and our neighbors both desire,
we feel would give continuity to the entire yard. In addition, it would serve as a backdrop for
plantings. Phase One was our interior and addition. Phase 2 is the courtyard we built and part of
that is the fence we propose that we are asking for. Phase 3 would be additional landscaping as
we can do it. We see this as part of our Master Plan and we feel for the continuity and for the
property value and the look of the house that having one contiguous fence-than having 2
different fences that don't match or go together--makes sense. Our reasons are simple: wanting
privacy but we want you to know that we have thoughtfully considered what would look nice. It
is not as though we are asking for a stockade or other fence that not be as attractive. Would
anyone consider amending the variance?
Mr. Doran said to ensure the durability and longevity of the fence, we are having posts set not
every 8' but every 6' and we are setting not 84" or 96" posts but 109" posts.
Mrs. Doran said that would take care of the wind factor. Our understanding is that the main
reason for having the partial privacy fence is having the durability of it and longevity of a fence.
We feel we have addressed that issue (wind) and if that's the only issue, we feel that our remedy
is worthwhile. We have had full privacy fences in our previous homes and we've never had a
problem with wind. Coming to Mayfield Village was the first time we were made aware wind
could be an issue. Again, we don't feel it is an issue.
Mrs. Cinco said I am one of the walkers on your street. I have watched all the work you have
done on your house. It is fabulous. You have done a beautiful job on that corner. It has been very
interesting. I don't see a reason to deny this. I think you have done a great job and I would
expect you to continue on.
Mr. Marne asked, and your neighbors don't object at all; is that correct?
Mrs. Doran said we spoke with him and he was going to be here. I didn't bring it with us, but he
wrote a letter that we gave---
Several Council members said we saw that.
Mayor Rinker asked, you did appear before the Architectural Review Board as well?
