Regular Council Minutes
9-27-04
Page 14
Mrs. Doran said for our additions.
Mayor Rinker asked, on this particular issue, they had not had a chance to review it-or-
Mrs. Doran said actually that was Phase 1 and we didn't have our complete plan then.
Mayor Rinker said but architecturally, this [style] is consistent with what they had looked at
previously? As far as you know.
Mrs. Doran said no we didn't...
Mayor Rinker said if they didn't look at it specifically but if you are saying that it is all in
keeping, that is my understanding.
Mrs. Doran said in my opinion it is. Our house is rather streamlined, simple; the colors that we
have chosen match the brick and it is kind of a natural color. We are proposing plain white fence;
it's very simple; it's not anything fancy. She showed the picture and said it's just a plain fence
with simple lines; not much to go wrong; not much to do to it.
Council President Buckholtz asked if all the letters went out appropriately to the neighbors?
Mr. Marrelli said yes they did.
Council President Buckholtz asked, and there was no objection?
Mr. Marrelli said no objection.
Mr. Saponaro said I actually view their house; my house is directly across the street. In my
estimation, the privacy fence would be very nice to look at with the landscaping in front of it
versus what I am currently looking at which is what they are looking at, unfortunately, the way
the street wraps around you are into Thornapple so you are looking at the playground and toys of
the neighbors. Forme, when I look out my front to see the fence-they have done such a
beautiful job with the house; to me, it would be very aesthetically pleasing so I am all for it.
Mrs. Mills said there is also the above ground pool adjacent to the playground equipment that
you probably don't want to look at either.
Mr. Saponaro said right.
Dr. Parker said I don't know if anyone is here from the Board of Appeals. I have read through
the minutes and I can see both sides of it. I would say that many times we are approached by the
Board of Appeals and they feel as though we are always overturning what they do. It seems to
me on this they are trying to be-well privacy fences are not allowed by our ordinances, they
were trying to be flexible in allowing them to have a privacy fence that would enclose the
Jacuzzi area and the porch area. However, they all felt it was not necessary or not warranted to
go to the end of the property. My only concern is if we allow a privacy fence in this instance or
overturn the Board of Appeals, what are we setting in terms of the use of privacy fences in
