Minutes of the Safety and Service Committee
February 6, 2006
Page 2
able to go through the five steps and get it baclCon, but then we had to research the underlying
cause. We checked everything out and brought the caretaker of the generator, Williams Detroit
Diesel out. We found out that chipmunks built a nest in the generator because it has a heater.
There was a nest on the circuit boards. They urinated down in to the controls of the generator.
They will be doing a test in the next several weeks. It is a thxee phase generator. Two legs are
okay, one is not. They have to do this test to see if it is going to work. The only way they test it is
under load. If it blows up, it blows up. Chief Mohr asked if there is any other test and they said
no. Mrs. Cinco asked if it blows up, will they need a new generator. Chief Mohr said maybe.
Mrs. Cinco asked what the cost of a new generator would be. Chief Mohr responded $60-
70,000.00, but he is going to ask the other cities to participate because this protects their radio
system also. This is not just us, it is everyone in the Hillcrest area. Mr. Marrie asked if we are
going to have a back-up generator. Chief Mohr indicated that would be in this building (civic).
The problem we have is with the current generator in the basement. It is 10 years old.
Discussion of new fire departanent ladder truck ($5,000.00 for safety equipment).
Chief Mohr referred to the proposal with the drawings of the new unit. The drawings are
the cutsheet. It shows pluses and minuses. The minuses were taken out. If you look at the stuff
taken out, like the chrome wheel covers, the cost is $5,700.00. $2,000.00 of the cost is federally-
mandated safety equipment that he has no control over. They have to put covers on the hose
beds. In Atlanta, Georgia this past summer, a fire truck went around the corner. A hoseline
came off, wrapped itself around a fire hydrant and as the truck sped down the road, it stretched
out as a rubber band, broke, came back and hit a little girl in the head, killing her. They have
now mandated that every fire truck built after January 1, 2006 have covers on a11 of their
hosebeds so that this never happens again. The other option is a safety option where there are
stairs so that it is easier for a person in a boot and bunker pant to get in. The only other luxury
item is that we are requesting to put an electrical reel on this truck. It is easier to do it while it is
being constructed. Mr. Marrie asked what the reel was for. Chief Mohr responded that if there
is a house or building fire and we want to use electrical fans, the reel would be run up into the
building. There is 250 feet run off the truck generator to power equipment. It is a big extension
cord.
This item will be placed on finance.
Itenewal of Ohio State Radio System (MARCS) ($5,820.00 for year 2006)
This item goes straight to finance.
. Resurfacing of Seneca ltoad, Glenview Road and Bonnieview Road ($532,800.00)
Mrs. Cinco asked if this would be in this year's budget. Mr. Metzung indicated that it
could be. Mr. Marrie indicated that he had talked to Mr. Brett earlier to see if there is some way
