Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
August 28, 2006
Page 8
and then that could affect the seating count. They are showing 216 as a minimum. With
narrower seats, they will get a higher number. Mr. Saponaro added that the front of the seating
block would be removable. Chairs would be in the first two rows so they can be removed if need
be.
Mr. Saponaro asked Paul, Angela or Ray what other projects they worked on. Paul
indicated that they renovated all the theaters in Playhouse Square, the Orpheum in Phoenix. They
brought back downtown Phoenix in the late 1980's. They go into smaller communities as well
and bring them back and let them be a catalyst for redevelopment. What is unique here is taking
this space which is a sanctuary and change our mindset to a performance space. There is work
that can be done on the outside as well as inside.
They also have theater consultants, experts, engineers and architects, all professional.
They certainly have been traveling through a lot of theaters in the country. To get excited about
a space like this is great. It has a lot of potential especially with the kind of programming
Fairmount and other potential users have.
When you go through the cost estimates, you will generally find that some numbers are
higher than you expect. Some are low and some are high. Service needs to be added to this
building. Power needs to be provided. The electrical number looks skewed and not expected.
Their job was to uncover what they think the costs were and estimate them, not necessarily every
part, they will get to that at the next phase. Their goal of this study was to determine whether the
project could be done.
Mr. Buckholtz added that you have done that. Mr. Saponaro indicated that the goals have
been met. Mr. Buckholtz thanked everyone for coming out.
COMMENTS FROM MAYOR RINKER
Mayor Rinker was unavailable to attend the Council meeting as he was out of town.
COMMENTS FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT BILL BUCKHOLTZ
Mr. Buckholtz did not have any comments at this time.
DEPARTMENT HEAD REPORTS:
SERVICE - Douglas Metzun~
There was no report.
BUILDING -John Marrelli
There was no report.
