Minutes of the Regular Meeting of Council
September 25, 2006
Page 4
We have a tradition of public support for the arts. Playhouse Square was saved from the
wrecking ball by support of public dollars. The orchestra concert at Public Square every year is
supported through public dollars. But we do need a sustained, consistent and dedicated source of
revenue. That is what this initiative would supply. All of the decisions on how the money would
be allocated would be made in a public process by objective and experienced judges. There are
organizations in place to help communities and others apply for the funds that are available.
Certainly no matter what the economic status of a community is, we are never able to provide the
support for all of the organizations within our community that would like and deserve our
support. This would provide a source of funds for arts and cultural activities throughout our
County that frankly could not be supported by each individual community but do deserve our
support to add to our quality of life.
Senator Fingerhut very much appreciates the opportunity to say a few words. He would
be happy to answer any questions. Certainly consider supporting the initiative either individually
or collectively. Also, please help us ensure that people throughout the community understand
the facts about the issue so that they can vote with a position of knowledge and understanding of
what it is that is on the ballot.
Mr. Buckholtz asked if anyone had any questions or comments.
Mr. Buckholtz heard this presentation last week at a meeting of the Northeast Ohio City
Council's Association in the Detroit Shoreway area to discuss this issue. After that meeting, Mr.
Buckholtz felt it was timely to have Senator Fingerhut provide a presentation to focus everyone
in on Issue 18. Assuming this passes, which he is hopeful that it will, there will be monies
available in the form of grants and for projects.
Senator Fingerhut stated that he appreciated the invitation. Mr. Buckholtz responded that
we appreciated Senator Fingerhut's presentation. Council thanked him.
COMMENTS FROM MAYOR RINKER
Mayor Rinker deferred discussions for items on the agenda tonight.
COMMENTS FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT BILL BUCKHOLTZ
With regard to the recent self-explanatory memo to Council prepared by Mr. Buckholtz
concerning volunteer Committees, Mr. Buckholtz stated that the only additional thing he
suggests is to expand descriptions and get them to the Committee members themselves. There
was some question about each Committee understanding their role and how it interacted with the
next Committee so that people are not stepping on each other's toes.
Mr. Buckholtz stated that he talked with Mrs. Mills who has compiled a list of a
combination of Activities Committee and Garden Club duties with regard to decorating for
events in the Village for the past 40 years. Mrs. Mills has provided this list to Mrs. Betsa.
