Regular Council Meeting
4-30-07
Page 2
Joe Saponaro reported that the goal of the Beautification Committee was to look at Mayfield Village
from an aesthetic perspective. As citizens, we should come together and take on little projects and
look at how we can beautify our center of town. The co-chairs of the Committee, Patti and Joanne
have taken on the task with the Committee and have put together some really terrific ideas. We are in
our second year. Something that was really important to us was to keep our Village clean and to also
get involved with the schools. That was extremely important because we felt that if we reached the
kids at a younger age, then their pride in their community in wanting to be a part of a community such
as Mayfield Village would continue on to wherever they went, so Patti and Joanne and the rest of the
Committee came up with an idea of working with the grade school and high school level students.
These posters are a result of Patti specifically talking with the teachers at the elementary schools to
come up with a program to help fight litter in Mayfield Village and keep it clean and beautiful and
well preserved. That is the goal of our Committee specifically to this project.
Mr. Buckholtz added that we try to get involved with a lot of community service and initiatives, but it
is rare that we see this kind of outpouring. Specifically, what the children put together here is
incredible. {The audience applauded}. The children go to school and participate in a lot of activities
and events. Sometimes maybe you don't realize exactly how far the work that you do goes, but when
the adults who tend to sometimes be part of the problem of littering the community see the work that
you guys do and they take notice and it is really rewarding.
Mr. Buckholtz advised that Patti Russo contacted the schools' art teacher, Ms. Stevenson who got the
ball rolling. What we are going to do now in addition to a plateful of cookies, is to get a11 of the kids
to line up in front of the pictures. We have for the children a little gift from Holcomb's Knowplace,
their educational stores. Mayfield Village is providing to each student a$10.00 gift certificate from
Holcomb's. There is also a free pass for each child to Knowville, the newest Holcomb's facility
which is right here in Mayfield Village on Beta Drive. We have one for each of the participants and
we want to get a nice photo of the group by the pictures. When we are done with the photo, we can all
take a brealc and have some cookies.
OPEN PORTION
5-minute limit imposed by Chair. Those who wish to speak must first state their name and address.
DEPA12Tl!'IENT HEAD REPORTS:
SERVICE - Douglas Metzung
Mr. Metzung reported that all but 11 of the street trees on S.O.M. are in.
