Caucus/Regular Council Mtg.
7-14-03
Page 10
_ ~
Mr. Thomas said Parkview Pool has sold approximately 750 pool passes. To date, it has been an
interesting summer; we've had up and down weather. Hopefully this week is going to be good.
y General admissions have been affected by that. We have a learn-to-swim program; for Session
One, we had 118 participants; in our evening classes, we had 41; parent and tot we had 22; and
4' and under, 11. On June 25 we went to Cedar Point. We had 132 participants/community
campers. On July 11 (this past Friday), we had 73 participants attend our Whitewater Rafting.
Just to give you some idea because of the wet spring and early summer rains, the trip would
normally take us 31/z to 4 hours; it took us 1% hours to go down the river. It truly was an
adventure. Last year the depth of the water was 1'9". This year it was over 6' high. It was a
very safe trip though. We had the 14th annual Debbie Hudacko Memorial Run and Walk which
was on July 6th. We had 180 runners and walkers. Feedback on the run race route was very, very
positive. We moved the route because of the construction. Now we have found that the move is
very successful because we are keeping the runners in shade and we will probably keep that
route for some time. On Wednesday, July 16, we will take approximately 30 participants to
Atwood Lake and Amish Country. Construction has begun at Wiley-if you haven't driven by
Wiley Park; Wiley 2 is now out of commission so we are relying on Wiley One and we also
found a field at Mayfield Middle School in the back and the School Board has been very
gracious to allow us to use it. We did receive the Nature Works Grant through the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources. (I couldn't remember if I had mentioned that last night for
$150,000 which will go toward the park development south of Parkview Pool. We are finalizing
our Fall brochure and the Parks & Recreation Brochure will hit the homes sometime around
" ~ August 18 or 19ch
~:
__ ~ Council President Buckholtz asked Mr. Thomas about Pi Society. I know there have been a
number of different activities but how many kids total would you say are involved?
Mr. Thomas said we have approximately 50 to 60 participants. It is going very well. The use of
the old Board [Building] in the basement is in use constantly by the kids. The program is going
very well.
Council President Buckholtz asked, we will plan a Fall session?
Mr. Thomas said we will be developing a Fall program.
STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS
Activities Committee -Mayor Rinker said we had a bang-up celebration for the 5th of July. I
think the question that I would like to raise for all of this-one of the quirks-and I think they've
gotten the format down wonderfully, but it was really a spectacular show; the Harry Hershey
Orchestra, (which is now run by Harry's son) they were into it. All the way around, things really
went very well. We even had the Toy Soldier from Tower City (who is used to doing it in the
wintertime under a much more ambient temperature....) Avery good time had by one and all.
Specifically the question I have for us, and I would like to put this to Zambelli, we had a little
carryover from last year. Last year, for some unknown reason, they cut short a certain moment
y and we lost about, I think, 50 [shells.] So they made up for the difference on this year's
