Caucus/Regular Council Mtg.
7-14-03
Page 18
Dr. Parker said when we talked about it in Finance Committee, it's amazing to think we are
spending $107,000 to cover a million dollars worth of liability. That's fine if that's what the
market is but maybe we should consider some kind of-something to send to the State for
insurance reform or some kind of statement.
Mr. Diemert suggested the Supreme Court.
Dr. Parker said to the Supreme Court for some kind of collective resolution I think would be
appropriate.
Roll Call: AYES: All
NAYS: None
® A motion to authorize an expenditure in the amount of $26,612.00 to Wickert
Insurance Services for Employee Policy Ilenewal Premium (Selective Ins. Co. -umbrella coverage July 1, 2003-July 1, 2004.
Mr. Brett said this is the umbrella portion. As I said to everyone, this is not the least expensive
coverage but I felt it was comparing apples to oranges to compare this with a less expensive
insurance policy. This one was a preferable package and that is why he is breaking it up from
the St. Paul Group and going to Selective Services.
Mr. Riter said since we've effectively passed the date for our previous coverage, does our carrier
give us the courtesy of a period of time to get this passed?
Mr. Brett said yes, it is 30 days. Again, he did not have numbers until the 26th of June; he was
negotiating up until the last minute.
Mr. Riter said being that we are a government body and theoretically we need a certain period of
time to follow procedures, isn't there a way that we can secure these in advance so that we can
have time to look at it and compare other bids and have time as a Council to really look at this?
I'm not saying that these are bad numbers or that he did a bad job for us, I'm just saying isn't
there a way in future years that we can get this sooner so we have other options?
