Relay
for Life is a fundraiser for cancer. This is something that happens not only nationwide; I think it
happens worldwide. This is the first time Mayfield Village participated in it. Students from the
High School, the response was really pretty incredible. The very brief period of time that this had
to get people's attention and make an impact because Relays for Life have been run on a
continuous basis, I think, for several years. It is a very successful volunteer, grass roots effort
that has over the years made substantial inroads in the fight for cancer. A lot of monies that these
Relay for Life events generate-in Ohio alone, for example, last year I think it was 8 million
dollars. This goes directly to research and different kinds of programs. Nobel Prize winners in
cancer research have been beneficiaries of these dollars. I was kind of amazed at how successful
and how longstanding it has been. Long story short: $33,000 was generated, I think, just from
this year alone. One of the High School groups pulled in about $5,000 which is just very
impressive. A lot of the feedback not only was positive but it was, we know, we ought to
advertise this more next year. We ought to put a banner up across Wilson Mills. A number of
those very practical suggestions were made. I think that we just want to take note of that. It's not
simply that it's for a good cause; this is something that works and that Mayfield was able to
make as much an impact in a relatively short period of time, I think it says a lot and it goes well
for the future. This is something we really should try to promote next year.
Expansion of Library -Mayor Rinker said tomorrow, Phil and I will be meeting along with
other Mayors, we've been invited to meet at the Regional Library. It's not like it's been front-
page news, but the plans have been in the offing for quite a while: the Regional Library up here
