Those who wish to
speak must first state their name and address.
Michael Wolfe, 6160 Robin Circle, said he is here to talk about the proposed softball fields and
lighted fields. The goal of the Mayfield Village Softball Program is to provide a program where kids
can learn the fundamentals of softball, have fun and learn to compete in a team environment. Both
my boys participated in softball playing as they continue through high school. By going forward
with the new lighted softball fields, Mayfield Village has committed to making even a more positive
difference in the lives of our young people. Many states have initiated revolutionary softball
programs for children ages 5-8 aimed at insuring kids have fun while getting them more active. By
developing successful grassroots programs, players can progress from the first introduction to
softball to either high performance sports or simply play softball as a lifetime activity and do it in
our community. The need for increasing the amount of fun for physical activity is clear as most
children in youth aged 5-17 are not active enough. The greatest challenge for minor sports
organizations is to provide quality sports experiences for children that are. age and developmentally
appropriate, allow for instant success and have fun. The Village's softball program has done that for
our kids and many of our neighbors. We can capture the attention of our young people; they want to
stay active in our community and hope to live here as adults. Mr. Wolfe recanted his conversation
with a manufacturing company president who has a home in Florida and Mayfield Village. The
gentleman said he was so impressed with what the Village has and is doing. He said he was unable
to see his grandson play because of rainouts and the need for make-up games; thus the field always
being in use. Make-up games were nearly impossible and our current fields are used heavily by adult
and youth leagues once the summer starts. Forget about team practices with the current availability
of the fields-it just doesn't happen.
Mr. Wolfe said by adding fields with appropriate lighting will allow rained out games to be made up
and more participation from all who are interested. I encourage Council to vote in favor of lighted
ballfields. Thank you.
