Minutes of a Public Hearing
October 6, 2010
Page 30
ability on an issue that's important enough to the candidate to be able to get that kind of
community support.
Q: I didn't want to bring up the issue, but it just was brought up about people who serve and
they get nothing to gain for it. Think Cuyahoga County. People can be, it's possible to
influence people.
1Vlayor Rinker: It's always possible. Candidly, one of the things that we're trying to do in this
venue as we did with our public hearing is give people a chance to come forward so we
can engage in this kind of discussion because in our Village I think it's fair to say, we're
not perfect, but we live here, we have neighbors, and we want to make sure that we can
hold our heads up, sleep at night, and make sure that our community is a great place to
live.
Q: I'm not accusing anything, but as I said, down the road, people come and go.
Mayor Rinker: IVo question. Part of the problem is that we always have to be vigilant. I think
being engaged, being participatory, we have a lot of volunteers in Mayfield Village. In
fact, I think if you were to poll most volunteers who have spent a lot of time, we all get
habituated. We live different patterns. Almost to a person, anyone who volunteers in the
Village, I would be willing to bet is more willing to look at these issues with little less
emotion up front or a little less mistrust. It doesn't mean they're not passionate about
their Village. So I'm not justifying it. I'm just trying to say we shouldn't lose sight of
the fact that we really do have a lot of people who engage in our local government and it
matters. It matters for all of us. And I just don't want you, when you see an issue like this
that becomes a real lightening rod, to forget that there really are a lot of conscientious
people who spend a lot of time with very little remuneration but the satisfaction of doing
something for their community. I see that day in and day out. We'll take a couple more
questions and then a break, but we will stick around.
Q: Paul, the Mayor stated that many times members of Council and he himself were asked
questions by the Review Commission. Did they have any influence on these two Charter
amendments, 84 and 86? Did they suggest any of these to the Commission? Or was it the
Commission's idea to bring these issues up?
