Regular Council Meeting
10/24/05
Page 6
volunteers, lay people, the clerk at the CVS Store, McDonald's clerk, the bookkeeper or the
housewife. They did a great job. They were not professional police officers, firefighters or EMS
personnel, but they rose to the occasion and did a very good job.
They had some organizational problems in the beginning, just trying to get everything organized,
figuring out where to put their personnel. A lot of that had to do with the damage assessments.
They had to figure out where the more damaged areas were. The information they obtained is
what they would use to figure out where they were going to put their service delivery sights, put
their shelters, allocate their resources, budgeting. It was more of an informational gathering type
thing. They did the same thing that John spoke of. They had an unofficial mission. They had
food and water in the trunks of the car that they disbursed. They had their own system in the
Ford Arena and Beaumont. Unofficially, but it worked. Sometimes people were not too happy
they were taking it, but it got to the people that needed it.
Sergeant Whitehead was there three weeks. One of the things with the Red Cross is that they do
two to three week deployment, so you are constantly having people come in and things changing.
It makes it a little bit difficult from the management point of view because the dynamics of your
teams are constantly changing. Everyone comes up and does their best to get the mission across.
Toward the end he had mixed feelings. Part of him wanted to come back to the Village and part
of him felt like the job was not done and he was leaving it behind and he wanted to stay and
finish it. They are still working on it now. He has been back for about a week and a half. It was a
good experience. Now you have Wilma. He got called yesterday by the Red Cross asking him
to go down to Wilma and he said he needed a little bit of down time, so not this time, but they
are constantly looking for personnel to deploy to these areas.
Sergeant Whitehead thanked everyone for their support. Without it, he would not be able to do
what he does.
Mr. Buckholtz thanked Firemen Panzica and Carcioppollo and Sergeant Whitehead for
representing Mayfield Village well. Everyone watched the television for reports of what was
going on as they were down there getting involved. They did a great thing.
Mr. Buckholtz called a break for re, freshments and cake in celebration. The meeting reconvened
at 9: OS p. m.
COMMENTS FROM COUNCIL PRESIDENT BUCKHOLTZ
Council President Buckholtz had no comments at this time.
DEPARTMENT HEAD REPORTS:
SERVICE - Douglas Metzun~
Mr. Metzung reported that leaf season has begun.
