Regular Council Meeting 1-24-00 Page 9 Planning & Zoning Commission - Mayor Rinker said Ralph Newman has been giving serious thought--and we hope he will still consider hanging onto this position. The I'8rZ Commission, similar to Ordinance Review and A.R.B. functions and the Board of Zoning Appeals, is another point of view, another perspective on looking to our zoning code and enforcing the spirit as well as the letter of the code. P&Z looks to broader issues, it serves in a recommending capacity for Council and it really is a body that is designed to evaluate much more plaruung, the long-term kinds of issues as well as short-term projects and to do a preliminary overview, serve as a comYnittee function that can get down to the heart, the nuts and bolts of any kind of proposal before Council itself has an opportunity to look at it. It is an important task. Mayor Rinker administered the oath of office to Ralph Newman for a ryear term. Records Commission - Mayor Rinker said members 1Vancy Plastine and Shirley Flugan are patient beyond measure. They review all kinds of stuff that we produce over the years and figure out what we want to keep and what not. They make sure that we are keeping tabs of ourselves, keeping our records intact and well organized. It's a very important function and we appreciate it. Mayor Rinker administered the oath of office to Shirley Flugan for a two-year term. Recreation Soard - Mayor Rinker said as I think many of you have been able to see, what a difference a year makes. Bill Thomas of boundless energy, has really challenged our Recreation Board to take what has been very important programming over the years and just expand upon it. In our community, for people of all ages, it is really exciting to see that there is a real spark behind a lot of the things that we are doing. We are expanding something good and we are making more of it. The Recreation Board serves a very important function. When we looked at planning the pool, that was a group effort and Recreation was very much involved in that. There is a playground facility that is being added onto the swiinnliilg pool. Again, the Recreation Board is involveti in that. Recreation is not with a small case "r", it is with a capital "R". It think it refiects a change in our society as a whole. In Mayfield Village, Recreation programs are a very important element of our community. We like to see these people on the Board and we'd like to see more residents involved in makuig sure that we have programs that reach out for all of us.
