I appreciate the feedback and the work, really, that our volunteers
provide. We say this every year and it bears repetition; it really is invaluable. And sometimes
it's difficult to make decisions about these positions but the fact of the matter is we really tty to
get a lot of different voices in the community. We tiy to get a good cross-section. For example
we have, already an undertaking that I think will prove to be valuable in the long run, in addition
to a11 of the other standing organizations that we have, that's the 2020 Vision group. In every
one of the organizations we find that the participation of residents, really, it makes a huge
difference. The dialogue, the communication. A day doesn't go by that I don't get feedback of
one kind or another from various department heads, from employees, letters that we receive from
residents; it really is very gratifying to see the level of interrelationship that we have within in
the community. And I would like everyone to look to the involvement as something that we a11
benefit from. It's hard to measure and it's hard to thank people for the volunteer effort that they
provide. Tonight, at least for those of you who have braved the cold weather, I am going to
muddle through a little bit; Donna gave me the various oaths of office here and what I will try to
do is with each organization call you up and administer the oath.
Mayor Rinker continued, I believe our first group will be the Activities Committee. I know
Chris Casey is here; Diane Catalano..... (Let me just read off the other members' names; those
that are or are not present.) He read: Mary Alice Chandramouli, Veronica DeClemente, Ester
DuBois, Marilyn LaRiche-Goldstein (I see Marilyn here); Laura Lynch, Jill Pappenhagen, Mary
Peto, Elliot Ross, Terry Santoro, A1 Scaccia, Elsa Simek, Nona Stella, Debbie Thomas, Ralph
Vara and Edie Wohlgang. All of those from the Activities Committee who are here tonight,
please step forward and I will swear you in. Not a lot of activity in this weather so we've only
got a few tonight.
Activities Committee. Mayor Rinker administered oath of offices to Christine Casey, Diane
Catalano and Marilyn LaRiche Goldstein as members of the Activities Committee.
Mayor Rinker said I will segue into a public service announcement. The Activities Committee is
going to have a little more than it had bargained for. This Summer, as you know, with good luck
and good fortune our S.O.M. widening project will begin this Spring. And unfortunately, it is
going to call for the closure of S.O.M. Center Road-at least for 45 days-and maybe as long as
90 days right after school lets out in the area between Thornapple and Beta-totally closed. And
Wanda Hejcl was talking earlier about how she used to be able to sled down the hill there and
now that the road will be blocked, you could do it but unforiunately you will have to get a good
snow machine-we hope that it will be warm enough by the time Summer rolls around. And just
to make it even more interesting, the other project that will commence about the same time south
of Wilson Mills on S.O.M. is a resurfacing project that O.D.O.T.
